(Photo: U.S. DOJ)<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>A Rhode Island man has been charged with conspiring to traffic firearms and making false statements after he allegedly operated a \u201cghost gun home factory\u201d and sold the completed firearms in the Dominican Republic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Police arrested Robert Alcantara, 34, as he was driving through the Bronx from a Pennsylvania gun show to his home in Rhode Island. Authorities seized parts for 45 &#8220;ghost guns&#8221; from his car, and a subsequent investigation revealed he had manufactured and sold more than 100 firearms, most of them handguns, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2022\/01\/06\/nyregion\/rhode-island-man-ghost-guns-arrested.html\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"rhode-island-man-charged-with-operating-ghost-gun-home-factory\" title=\"Rhode Island Man Charged with Operating 'Ghost Gun Home Factory'\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>New York Times<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cUntraceable \u2018ghost guns\u2019 pose a serious threat to public safety,\u201d said Damian Williams, the United States Attorney for the Southern District of New York. \u201cAs alleged, the defendant agreed with others to buy the parts for these firearms, put them together at his home, and then unlawfully sold or attempted to sell over 100 of them. However, federal law does not allow a person to be \u201cin the business\u201d of manufacturing or selling firearms without a license.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Alcantara told federal investigators he did not plan to sell the firearms he had been making. But a search of Alcantara\u2019s phone allegedly revealed that he offered to have his mother transport firearms to the Dominica Republic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Investigators also took the number of \u201cghost gun\u201d kits Alcantara purchased as evidence for his intent to sell. Council Quickly Fixes \u2018Ghost Gun\u2019 Law after Court Challenge by Heller<\/a><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Authorities also found photos on his phone of a sanding belt, a hydraulic drill press, and other tools used in assembling the guns, according to the <em>Times<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So-called \u201cghost guns\u201d have landed in the crosshairs of the anti-gun lobby in recent years. It has always been legal in the United States to manufacture guns at home for personal use, but opponents of the practice claim that modern \u201cghost gun\u201d kits make the process too easy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That\u2019s the basis for a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gunsamerica.com\/digest\/call-to-action-submit-your-comment-on-atfs-new-frame-or-receiver-rule-today\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"rhode-island-man-charged-with-operating-ghost-gun-home-factory\" title=\"Rhode Island Man Charged with Operating 'Ghost Gun Home Factory'\">new rule proposed<\/a> by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives that would ban \u201cghost guns\u201d and create a new standard for what counts as a \u201cframe or receiver.\u201d Rather than use the state of manufacture, the new standard would consider the time, skill, and tools needed to turn raw material into frames or receivers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This latest high-profile arrest appears to be in concert
