(<em>Photo: Whitehouse.gov<\/em>)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The Biden administration announced this week a \u201cnew\u201d rule mandating that federal firearm licensees (FFLs) provide safe gun storage options to their customers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cToday\u2019s announcements build on the department\u2019s efforts to reduce the risk of firearms falling into the wrong hands,\u201d said Attorney General Merrick B. Garland in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.justice.gov\/opa\/pr\/justice-department-announces-new-rule-help-enhance-safe-and-secure-storage-firearms-publishes\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"new-biden-rule-mandating-safe-gun-storage-much-ado-about-nothing\" title=\"New Biden Rule Mandating Safe Gun Storage 'Much Ado About Nothing'\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">press release<\/a>. \u201cGun safety is a Department of Justice priority, and we will continue to take all appropriate steps to help reduce the number of people killed and injured by the misuse of firearms.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Apparently issued as a response to the recent mass murder in Michigan, the new rule would require that FFLs&nbsp;certify that they have secure gun storage devices available to their customers for purchase. These gun storage devices can include safes, lockboxes, or \u201cother devices,\u201d but there must be devices available for each type of firearm being sold.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But Mark Oliva of the National Shooting Sports Foundation told GunsAmerica that the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF) has been mandating this requirement for years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">SEE ALSO: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gunsamerica.com\/digest\/anti-gunners-seize-on-michigan-school-killing-to-advance-agenda-solicit-donations\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"new-biden-rule-mandating-safe-gun-storage-much-ado-about-nothing\" title=\"New Biden Rule Mandating Safe Gun Storage 'Much Ado About Nothing'\">Anti-Gunners Seize on Michigan School Killing to Advance Agenda, Solicit Donations<\/a><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis Final Rule is a much ado about nothing,\u201d he said in an email. \u201cThis is something the firearm industry and firearm retailers have been doing for years. Federal firearm licensees have been certifying with the ATF that they provide secure gun storage devices when they renew their licenses. This has been standard practice.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In fact, the gun industry has been voluntarily offering safe storage devices to all retail consumers. Every new firearm sold at retail contains a locking device, and the NSSF\u2019s Project ChildSafe has partnered with law enforcement agencies in all 50 states to distribute locking devices to anyone who wants one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Over the last 20 years, these initiatives have resulted in 100 million locking devices being distributed to gun owners.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe are proud that the Department of Justice affirms the good work the firearm industry has been doing on a voluntary basis for years,\u201d Oliva said. \u201cWhile the Biden administration will point to this Final Rule and claim that they are tightening gun control, it is clear that this is already being done voluntarily.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">SEE ALSO: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gunsamerica.com\/digest\/sen-chris-murphy-failure-to-enact-gun-control-is-endorsement-to-would-be-killers\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"new-biden-rule-mandating-safe-gun-storage-much-ado-about-nothing\" title=\"New Biden Rule Mandating Safe Gun Storage 'Much Ado About Nothing'\">Sen. Chris Murphy: Failure to Enact Gun Control Is \u2018Endorsement\u2019 to Would-Be Killers<\/a><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Project ChildSafe has been recognized for its efficacy by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nssf.org\/articles\/government-report-supports-project-childsafe-effectiveness\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"new-biden-rule-mandating-safe-gun-storage-much-ado-about-nothing\" title=\"New Biden Rule Mandating Safe Gun Storage 'Much Ado About Nothing'\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Government Accountability Office<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nssf.org\/articles\/nssfs-project-childsafe-named-finalist-prestigious-national-safety-council-award\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"new-biden-rule-mandating-safe-gun-storage-much-ado-about-nothing\" title=\"New Biden Rule Mandating Safe Gun Storage 'Much Ado About Nothing'\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">National Safety Council\u2019s Green Cross Awards<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Biden\u2019s rule comes on the heels of a mass murder in Oxford, Michigan, in which the killer used an unsecured firearm to kill four of his schoolmates.
