Officials say the officer violated the department\u2019s policy on the use of deadly force.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Officer Ryan Remington was working a special off-duty assignment at a Walmart when he was approached by an employee who reported that a man in a wheelchair had just stolen a toolbox. The man was later identified as 61-year-old Richard Lee Richards.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When confronted by Remington, Richards pulled out a knife and rolled across the parking lot and towards the garden center of a Lowes. Remington asked the man to surrender the knife, but he refused.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Remington followed the man across the parking lot and fired nine times as Richards entered the Lowes. Richards was struck in the back and side, and he fell out of his chair onto the ground.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">SEE ALSO: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gunsamerica.com\/digest\/watch-naked-new-jersey-businessman-chases-car-thieves-with-ar-15-police-take-his-guns\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"arizona-officer-fired-for-shooting-killing-man-in-wheelchair-wielding-a-knife\" title=\"Arizona Officer Fired for Shooting, Killing Man in Wheelchair Wielding a Knife\">WATCH: Naked New Jersey Businessman Chases Car Thieves with AR-15, Police Take His Guns<\/a><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Officers rendered aid, but Richards was pronounced dead at the scene.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In a press conference Tuesday, TPD Chief Chris Magnus said he was \u201cdeeply disturbed\u201d by Remington\u2019s action.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cHis use of deadly force in this incident is a clear violation of department policy and directly contradicts multiple aspects of our use of force training. As a result, the department moved earlier today to terminate officer Remington,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Remington and his lawyers with the Tucson Police Officers Association accused the police department of releasing an edited version of the incident.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;What you saw was the police department&#8217;s edited version of this event, which was cut and pasted pieces of video of this event,&#8221; Mike Storie, Tucson Police Officers Association attorney, told <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kgun9.com\/news\/local-news\/tucson-police-investigate-officer-involved-shooting-on-valencia-road\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"arizona-officer-fired-for-shooting-killing-man-in-wheelchair-wielding-a-knife\" title=\"Arizona Officer Fired for Shooting, Killing Man in Wheelchair Wielding a Knife\">KGUN<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">SEE ALSO: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gunsamerica.com\/digest\/watch-dc-police-shoots-kills-suspect-wielding-air-powered-rifle\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"arizona-officer-fired-for-shooting-killing-man-in-wheelchair-wielding-a-knife\" title=\"Arizona Officer Fired for Shooting, Killing Man in Wheelchair Wielding a Knife\">WATCH: DC Police Shoots, Kills Suspect Wielding Air-Powered Rifle<\/a><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Storie also said that Remington thought his use of force was \u201cappropriate at the time he used it and he still does.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Remington\u2019s firing was effective on December 7, but he\u2019s still facing the possibility of criminal prosecution.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Tucson Mayor Regina Romero called his action\u2019s \u201cindefensible\u201d and gave her \u201cfull support\u201d to the investigation of the Pima County Attorney&#8217;s Office.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe actions of the officer involved in last night\u2019s deadly shooting\u00a0are\u00a0unconscionable and\u00a0indefensible,\u201d she said. \u201cThe\u00a0County Attorney\u2019s Office has my full support as they\u00a0proceed with their\u00a0investigation.\u00a0It is moments like this that test our resolve to ensure justice and accountability.\u00a0We owe this to all Tucsonans.\u00a0I ask our community to remain\u00a0calm and be patient as investigations ensue.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"has-text-align-center wp-block-heading\">***<a href=\"https:\/\/gunsamerica.com\/\" campaign=\"BuySellGA_Register\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\">Buy and Sell on GunsAmerica!<\/a>***<\/h2>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A Tucson police officer is being fired for shooting and killing a man in a wheelchair who was holding a knife.
