Buyer’s Guide: How To Choose The Best Steel Targets In 2026

Buying steel targets is about safety first, then fit for your guns and your range. Here is what matters.

AR500 Versus AR550 Steel

The AR stands for abrasion resistant. AR400 is cheaper and really only suitable for pistol calibers. AR500 is the gold standard for most quality targets. AR550 is harder still, which makes it even more resistant to dimpling. Avoid mild steel and homemade plate for anything but rimfire, because pitted steel is dangerous.

Thickness And Caliber Ratings

Thicker plate handles more energy. As an example from our testing, TaTargets rates its 1/2 inch AR550 plates at 10 yards for pistol, 30 yards for .223 with appropriate ammo, 50 yards for .308, and 100 yards for magnum rifles. Always follow the manufacturer’s ratings. Never shoot steel with steel-core or armor-piercing ammunition.

Minimum Safe Distances

Our BC-C Zone reviewer’s personal rule of thumb is 10 meters for normal pistol calibers, 15 meters for magnum pistols, 50 meters for 5.56, 100 meters for .308 or 6.5 Creedmoor, and 300 meters for magnum rifles. Read and follow each manufacturer’s guidelines, wear eye protection, and remember that rifles at close range can crater even AR550, as our torture test showed.

Angle And Movement

A target that hangs angled forward and down directs fragments into the ground, typically within about 5 meters of the target, rather than back at you. Targets that swing or move on impact absorb energy, which protects both the steel and the shooter.

Stands And Portability

Many systems use 2×4 uprights, which are cheap to replace when you shoot them and will not throw bullets back like a steel post. Collapsible stands and bucket kits make it easy to haul steel to the range. Heavier bases are better for a permanent home range.

Size And Shape

Small plates and reduced silhouettes keep you honest and add challenge at distance. Larger silhouettes are better for new shooters and fast drills. A plate rack adds a fun, competitive element. Most shooters end up with a mix.

Best Steel Targets Ranked: 2026 Product Roundup

TaTargets Mini A-DAP System: Best for Overall Steel Target (2026)

Two of our writers tested the TaTargets Mini A-DAP, and both came away impressed. It is a reduced C-zone silhouette, 8 inches wide by 16 inches tall, based on the IPSC cardboard target, and it comes in 3/8 or 1/2 inch AR550 steel, harder than the AR500 most companies use. Angled mounts deflect fragments down and away from the shooter. Our original author, who disclosed a partnership with the company, ran it with Oklahoma State’s practical shooting team for hundreds of rounds a day.

Read our full TaTargets Mini A-DAP review here.

Pistols did not dent it at all, and .223 and 7.62×39 at 30 yards barely marked the face. He has shot it out to 600 yards. Our second reviewer liked the standard 20 inch round base: throw it on the ground, add a 2×4, hang the target, and shoot, and he noted the company once rejected a steel shipment that did not meet AR550 hardness. TaTargets offered a lifetime warranty at the time. The complete system started at $195 in our 2020 review, and the most popular package listed at $271.75 as of November 2021.

Key Specs

- Steel: AR550, 3/8 or 1/2 inch

- Size: 8 x 16 inch reduced C-zone

- Ratings (1/2 inch): 10 yd pistol, 30 yd .223, 50 yd .308, 100 yd magnum

- Base: 20 inch round or Arachnid base

- Price: From $195 at time of review

Pros

- Very hard AR550 steel

- Angled mount sends fragments down

- Challenging size for pistol and rifle

- Lifetime warranty at the time

Cons

- Original author partnered with the brand

- Smaller target is harder for beginners

MGM BC-C Zone: Best for Versatile Pistol And Rifle Target (2026)

Our reviewer calls this his favorite target, and he explained why. The BC-C Zone mimics the vital zone of a threat, so it works for competition and tactical training, and it is about 40 percent lighter than a full-size USPSA torso target, which matters when you are setting up your own range. It is AR500 with a smooth face, hangs at a 30-degree angle so fragments go down, and mounts on a 2×4 that costs a few dollars to replace.

Read our full MGM BC-C Zone review here.

It is big enough for pistol speed work at 10 meters and a challenging pistol shot at about 50 meters, where it is also ideal for rifle drills like an AR-15 El Presidente. He shoots it from 50 meters to past 1,000 meters with precision rifles, and it moves enough to see hits at long range. The plate measures 11-13/16 by 23-5/8 inches. Pricing at the time of the 2017 review was $315.34 for target and base, or $263.58 for the target alone.

Key Specs

- Steel: AR500

- Plate: 11-13/16 x 23-5/8 inches

- Angle: 30-degree down angle

- Stand: 2×4 upright with steel base

- Price: $315.34 with base at time of review

Pros

- Pistol to 1,000+ meter rifle use

- Lighter than a full torso

- Down angle for safety

- Cheap 2×4 uprights

Cons

- 2×4 uprights need replacing

- Pricier than basic plates

Action Target PT Tactical Torso: Best for Proven Tough Portable Silhouette (2026)

We did not just shoot the Action Target PT Tactical Torso. We tortured it. The AR550 target has swinging plates and a portable mild-steel stand with a clever bent edge facing the shooter, so a hit on the stand does not bounce straight back. To show what happens when people break the rules, our tester shot it with an AR-15 at 50 yards, which Action Target’s instructions say is about 100 yards too close for rifle fire.

Read our full Action Target torture test here.

The swinging plates took no damage, though fragments sandblasted the powder coat off the back. The AR did leave divots in the AR550 at that range, and the stand took hits too, though it is an easily replaced part. The lesson is the point: even top-grade steel has limits, so follow the distance guidelines. Handguns are fine as close as 10 yards per the review, while rifles belong at 100 yards or more. Price was $349 direct from Action Target at the time of the 2014 review.

Key Specs

- Steel: AR550 target; mild steel stand

- Features: Swinging plates, deflecting stand edge

- Pistol: 10 yards minimum per review

- Rifle: 100+ yards per manufacturer guidance

- Price: $349 at time of review

Pros

- Survived deliberate abuse

- Smart deflecting stand

- Easy assembly once understood

Cons

- Rifle at close range dents even AR550

- Powder coat wears from splatter

MGM Plate Rack In A Bucket: Best for Portable Plate Rack (2026)

A plate rack is one of the most challenging and fun targets you can shoot, but our coverage noted that a full traditional rack ran north of $1,000 at the time and you need a forklift to place it. MGM’s answer packs six 8 inch HexPlate targets of 3/8 inch AR500, six hooks, and two beam hangers into a carry bucket. It weighs about 30 pounds, needs no tools, and fits anywhere.

Read our full MGM Plate Rack in a Bucket coverage here.

It hangs from 2x4s, so when you shoot up the uprights you are out a few dollars at the hardware store. It is a great way to run plate rack drills, transitions, and competition practice at a price that does not break the bank. MSRP was $299 at the time of our 2017 coverage. Our coverage is a short product feature rather than a long-term test.

Key Specs

- Plates: Six 8 inch HexPlates

- Steel: 3/8 inch AR500

- Weight: About 30 lb

- Setup: No tools, hangs from 2x4s

- MSRP: $299 at time of review

Pros

- Plate rack fun at a fraction of the cost

- Packs into a bucket

- No tools needed

Cons

- Short product feature

- 2x4s not included per our coverage

Action Target Scout: Best for Collapsible Carry Target (2026)

The Action Target Scout is a collapsible, no-tools steel target that weighs about as much as a gallon of milk, which our writer looked up at 8.6 pounds. Setting it up and taking it down is a cinch, and the company told us you could stand on the legs without bending them. A clever touch: if you need to change the plate, the legs double as a wrench.

Read our full Action Target Scout coverage here.

It is built for shooters who want to throw steel in a pack or trunk and set up anywhere. Our coverage is a short first look rather than a full test, so follow Action Target’s ratings for distance and caliber. Price was expected to be around $300 at the time of the 2018 coverage.

Key Specs

- Weight: About 8.6 lb

- Setup: Collapsible, no tools

- Feature: Legs double as plate wrench

- Use: Portable pistol and rifle steel

- Price: About $300 at time of review

Pros

- Very light and portable

- Fast setup

- Sturdy legs

Cons

- Short first look

- Light stand may move on heavy hits

MGM Hex Steel Challenge And Autopopper: Best for Budget Starter Set (2026)

If you are just starting to build a home range, MGM offered a pair of targets for under $200 at the time of our 2017 coverage. The Hex Steel Challenge set includes a 2×4 stand and a 10 inch AR500 plate, a size our writer called great for new shooters. It provides plenty of challenge with a pistol at 10 meters and remains a challenge at 50 meters as your skills grow.

Read our full MGM two-target deal coverage here.

The other half is a 6 inch Autopopper, a plate that falls when hit and pops back up, with spikes to secure it to the ground. Self-resetting targets keep you shooting instead of walking downrange. Together they make a solid, affordable first steel setup. Our coverage is a short deal feature, so check current MGM pricing and bundles.

Key Specs

- Targets: 10 inch hex plate and 6 inch Autopopper

- Steel: AR500

- Stand: 2×4 stand; ground spikes for popper

- Use: Pistol 10 to 50 meters

- Price: Under $200 for both at time of review

Pros

- Affordable starter set

- Self-resetting popper

- Good sizes for new shooters

Cons

- Short deal feature

MGM Hexalloy Target System: Best for High-Energy Rifle Steel (2026)

MGM designs its Hexalloy targets with a lot of movement, both in the base and where the plate connects to the stand. As MGM’s marketing director told us, that give keeps kinetic energy from transferring into the target. The hexagon shape offers up to 13 percent more target area than a round plate of the same size, and each is made from AR500.

Read our full MGM Hexalloy coverage here.

The display target we saw had taken hits from 80 yards from a .338 Lapua and a .22-250 with no discernible damage, and the down angle kept shooters safe even inside what some consider an unsafe rifle distance. It had even survived continuous machine gun fire with only slight pocking, which happened because the fire pinned the plate. Our coverage is a 2018 show report rather than a hands-on test, so follow MGM’s distance ratings.

Key Specs

- Steel: AR500

- Shape: Hexagon, up to 13 percent more area than round

- Design: High-movement base and hanger

- Use: Rifle and pistol

- Coverage: 2018 show report

Pros

- Movement absorbs energy

- More target area

- Survived heavy rifle fire on display

Cons

- Show report, not a hands-on test

Final Thoughts On The Best Steel Targets Of 2026

For most shooters, the TaTargets Mini A-DAP is the best steel target to start with: AR550 steel, a smart angled mount, and a size that challenges both pistol and rifle shooters. The MGM BC-C Zone is the more versatile full silhouette, and the Action Target PT Tactical Torso proved how much abuse quality steel can take. Add the MGM Plate Rack in a Bucket for fun, the Action Target Scout for portability, or the MGM starter set if you are on a budget.

Whatever you buy, follow the distance and caliber ratings, wear eye protection, and replace any steel that gets cratered.

It is built for shooters who want to throw steel in a pack or trunk and set up anywhere. Our coverage is a short first look rather than a full test, so follow Action Target’s ratings for distance and caliber. Price was expected to be around $300 at the time of the 2018 coverage.
