And after the debates around Rittenhouse, it\u2019s time to rethink open carry, as a matter of ethics and law. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/2daiagOyJI\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"david-french-time-to-rethink-open-carry-as-a-matter-of-ethics-and-law\" title=\"David French: Time to \u2018rethink open carry, as a matter of ethics and law\u2019\">https:\/\/t.co\/2daiagOyJI<\/a><\/p>\u2014 David French (@DavidAFrench) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/DavidAFrench\/status\/1460729391554736243?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"david-french-time-to-rethink-open-carry-as-a-matter-of-ethics-and-law\" title=\"David French: Time to \u2018rethink open carry, as a matter of ethics and law\u2019\">November 16, 2021<\/a><\/blockquote> <script async=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n\n\n\n<p>Author, attorney, and Iraq veteran David French believes it\u2019s time to \u201crethink open carry, as a matter of ethics and law.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In a <a href=\"https:\/\/frenchpress.thedispatch.com\/p\/kyle-rittenhouse-open-carry-and-the\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"david-french-time-to-rethink-open-carry-as-a-matter-of-ethics-and-law\" title=\"David French: Time to \u2018rethink open carry, as a matter of ethics and law\u2019\">post<\/a> on <em>The Dispatch<\/em>, French makes the case that too often those exercising their right to keep and bear arms openly do so in a manner that is intentionally intimidating to others. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cYet it\u2019s a mistake to believe that open carry is always tied to out-of-control unrest,\u201d writes French, referencing the Kenosha shooting involving Kyle Rittenhouse. \u201cIt\u2019s become part and parcel of all too many protests, including anti-lockdown protests and election protests, even at public officials\u2019 homes.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThere is no credible argument that this form of open carry is \u2018self-defense.\u2019 It\u2019s intentional intimidation.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>French believes that the government can and should \u201ctightly restrict open carry.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I don\u2019t want to call into question French\u2019s 2A bona fides, as he owns an AR, is a licensed concealed carrier, and staunchly supports one\u2019s natural right to self-defense but does he recognize that his argument for essentially banning open carry <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gunsamerica.com\/digest\/everytowns-answer-to-armed-extremism-ban-open-carry\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"david-french-time-to-rethink-open-carry-as-a-matter-of-ethics-and-law\" title=\"David French: Time to \u2018rethink open carry, as a matter of ethics and law\u2019\">mirrors<\/a> that of Everytown for Gun Safety?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In a \u201cfact sheet\u201d called, \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/everytownresearch.org\/report\/more-than-brawlers-the-proud-boys-and-armed-extremism\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"david-french-time-to-rethink-open-carry-as-a-matter-of-ethics-and-law\" title=\"David French: Time to \u2018rethink open carry, as a matter of ethics and law\u2019\">More Than Brawlers: The Proud Boys and Armed Extremism<\/a>\u201d published in July, the Bloomberg-funded organization stated that a \u201cstraightforward way to curb armed intimidation by extremist groups\u201d is to \u201crestrict the open display of firearms, especially during protests or at other public places.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cOpen carry is a threat to public safety and armed extremism demonstrates the folly of open carry laws,\u201d they continued. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">SEE ALSO: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gunsamerica.com\/digest\/kimbers-expanding-their-rapide-series-with-new-full-size-and-micro-models\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"david-french-time-to-rethink-open-carry-as-a-matter-of-ethics-and-law\" title=\"David French: Time to \u2018rethink open carry, as a matter of ethics and law\u2019\">Kimber\u2019s Expanding their Rapide Series with New Full-Size and Micro Models<\/a><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Notice the repeated use of the word \u201cintimidation\u201d both from French and from Everytown.&nbsp; The conceit is that anytime a gun is displayed in public it has the potential to frighten people, which cannot stand because apparently one\u2019s \u201cright\u201d to not feel intimidated trumps one\u2019s right to exercise a fundamental right. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>French even strongly asserts this, \u201c\u2026I completely reject the notion that I have a right to intimidate my fellow citizens. I don\u2019t have a right to use my weapons to make them afraid.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The problem with this way of reasoning is that it subordinates the right itself to the emotional response it creates in a select few.\u00a0 The Left is attacking free speech along the same lines in that they argue <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=44pERGAaKHw\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"david-french-time-to-rethink-open-carry-as-a-matter-of-ethics-and-law\" title=\"David French: Time to \u2018rethink open carry, as a matter of ethics and law\u2019\">one\u2019s right to not be offended<\/a> trumps one\u2019s right to speak freely (see video below). \u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"854\" height=\"480\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/44pERGAaKHw\" title=\"YouTube video player\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen=\"\"><\/iframe>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is a very dangerous precedent to set for obvious reasons.&nbsp; Because there\u2019s no getting around the fact that in a free society someone will always feel intimidated and someone will always be offended.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>French and Everytown would have us believe that the solution is to make society less free, to broadly curtail fundamental rights to make people <em>feel<\/em> safer.&nbsp; But in doing this it actually has the opposite effect in that it makes people increasingly soft over time, which makes people more easily triggered, which, in turn, necessitates more restrictions on fundamental rights from the Nanny State.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The truth is if you feel threatened by someone else carrying a firearm in a lawful manner, that&#8217;s a <em>you<\/em> problem, not a problem with the law.&nbsp; You need to ask yourself why you\u2019re scared.&nbsp; What you may find is that you\u2019re scared because you\u2019re not prepared to deal with physical violence, and that you\u2019ve shirked your responsibility to be capably armed, to muster, what Jordan Peterson calls, \u201cself-protective territorial responses.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe forces of tyranny expand inexorably to fill the space made available for their existence. People who refuse to muster appropriately self-protective territorial responses are laid open to exploitation as much as those who genuinely can\u2019t stand up for their own rights because of a more essential inability or a true imbalance in power,\u201d wrote Peterson in his book \u201c12 Rules for Life.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The way to become less fearful is to become more capable in the face of danger.&nbsp; Learn the basics of self-defense, learn how to use a firearm, learn to carry one responsibly.  Personal agency, via exercising one&#8217;s right to keep and bear arms, is the best way to alleviate one&#8217;s fear of them.
