Remington announced this week that it will be moving its global headquarters from Ilion, New York to LaGrange, Georgia, as part of a $100 million expansion that will include a new manufacturing operation as well as a research and development center.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Big Green says along with the money, it plans to create 856 jobs over the next five years in Troup County.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Georgia’s firearms industry is responsible for thousands of jobs and millions of dollars of investment in our communities,” said Governor Brian P. Kemp in a press release obtained by GunsAmerica<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

“I am a proud owner of some of Remington’s first-class product, and now, I am excited to welcome them to their new home in the Peach State,\u201d he continued.  \u201cAs yet another big manufacturing win for our state, I look forward to seeing the oldest firearms manufacturer in America thrive in Georgia’s pro-business environment.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Remington\u2019s been making firearms for over two centuries, but in the last decade or so ran into financial problems following recalls on certain products<\/a> and lawsuits<\/a>.  Big Green was forced to declare bankruptcy in 2018 and once again in 2020.<\/a>  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Following the latest Chapter 11 filing, the company was splintered into pieces and auctioned off.  Vista Outdoor scooped up Remington Ammo and the Roundhill Group bought the non-Marlin gun business for $13 million, which included the Ilion plant and the operations in Lenoir City, Tennessee.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

“We are very excited to come to Georgia, a state that not only welcomes business but enthusiastically supports and welcomes companies in the firearms industry,” said Ken D\u2019Arcy, RemArms CEO. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Between the support we\u2019ve received from the state and from Scott Malone and Kelley Bush of the City of LaGrange Economic Development Authority, we cannot wait to expand our company in Georgia,\u201d he continued. \u201cEveryone involved in this process has shown how important business is to the state and how welcoming they are to all business, including the firearms industry.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As part of the deal, Remington will receive generous tax incentives.  Per Syracuse.com<\/em><\/a>: <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Remington could claim various state tax breaks, including an income tax credit allowing it to annually deduct $3,000 per job from state income taxes, up to $12.8 million over five years, as long as workers make at least $28,000 a year. The state will also pay to train workers, but declined to detail the entire incentive package, saying it was not complete yet.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

Certainly, the gun maker was not shown the same love in New York.  Before disgraced Gov. Andrew Cuomo resigned in August following a sexual harassment scandal, he signed into law legislation that would allow civil lawsuits against firearm manufacturers for the criminal actions by non-associated third parties.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The goal was, of course, to bankrupt gun makers under a public nuisance loophole<\/a>.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

No doubt the Peach State — which is also home to gun-making giants HK, Taurus, Daniel Defense and Glock — will be a greener pasture for the Remington brand.\u00a0 <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Though, as of now, it\u2019s not clear how it will affect those dedicated employees in Ilion nor in Lenoir City.  Maybe they\u2019ll have an opportunity to relocate as Remington has announced that they will be hiring position \u201cproduction, operations, engineering, and management, as well as careers in HR, finance, and administration.\u201d  <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n
