Former President Barack Obama appeared on \u201cGood Morning America<\/a>\u201d this week to celebrate the unveiling of the Obama Presidential Center in Chicago<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

During his conversation with GMA anchor Robin Roberts, the subject of crime came up as it\u2019s no secret that the Windy City has struggled to combat violence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

To put things in perspective, homicides in Chicago were up 56 percent in 2020 (772 homicides) from 2019 (496 homicides), according to the FBI<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Obama indicated that the lack of gun control on the national level is partly to blame, saying that Congress needs to enact \u201ccommon-sense gun safety measures.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Chicago alone can’t stop the easy access and flood of guns into these communities. But what we can do is potentially give young people the sense that there’s another way for them to empower themselves, other than wielding a gun,” Obama said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Obama did not delve into the details as to what he meant by \u201ccommon-sense gun safety measures,\u201d but one can safely assume based on his advocacy<\/a> in the past that he means criminalizing private transfers, banning black rifles and standard magazines with a capacity over 10 rounds, confiscatory red flag laws, no-fly-no-buy lists, prohibitions on certain gun parts and accessories, among others. \u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Along with \u201ceasy access to guns,\u201d Obama cited another \u201cconstant\u201d to explain the bloodshed. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

“The constant is young people, mostly young men, who have not gotten a good education, don’t have a good opportunity, are not seeing good role models, are living in neighborhoods that are frayed and fractured,\u201d he explained. \u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Maybe Obama is trying not to offend his woke contingency or maybe he just doesn’t have the courage to expressly say it but the real problem is gang culture. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

An issue that Chicago Police Superintendent David Brown had no problem singling out. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI just want to make sure we got the top line right: We\u2019re going after gangs,\u201d Brown said at a recent press conference,<\/a> where he announced a shift in policing strategy. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe\u2019re going after gangs, and we\u2019re going to do it constitutionally,” he continued. “We\u2019re going to make sure we don\u2019t violate anyone\u2019s rights, but gangs are out of control in this city and we\u2019re going after them to hold them accountable.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Targeting the gangsters responsible for the vast majority of violence should pay dividends. But sadly, no matter how successful that strategy is, it won’t keep those with power — people like Obama, Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot, President Joe Biden, Billionaire Michael Bloomberg — from coming after 2A rights. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
