Gavin Newsom gave a press conference in which he attempted to bolster his image on crime heading into the home stretch of a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sfgate.com\/gavin-newsom-recall\/article\/poll-Gavin-Newsom-recall-losing-Elder-Paffrath-16364991.php\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"nra-ila-newsom-exposes-the-political-purpose-of-californias-taxpayer-funded-anti-gun-factoid-factory\" title=\"NRA-ILA: Newsom Exposes the Political Purpose of California\u2019s Taxpayer-funded Anti-gun Factoid Factory\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">hotly contested<\/a>&nbsp;recall election. According to the California Attorney General\u2019s office, homicides were up 31 percent in 2020 over 2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As is&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theblaze.com\/news\/chicago-mayor-lightfoot-blames-guns-not-shooter-female-police-officer-death\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"nra-ila-newsom-exposes-the-political-purpose-of-californias-taxpayer-funded-anti-gun-factoid-factory\" title=\"NRA-ILA: Newsom Exposes the Political Purpose of California\u2019s Taxpayer-funded Anti-gun Factoid Factory\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">the habit of soft-on-violent-crime politicians<\/a>, Newsom attempted to pin the blame for California\u2019s homicide wave on inanimate objects. Describing the press conference in a headline, the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sacbee.com\/news\/politics-government\/capitol-alert\/article252925978.html\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"nra-ila-newsom-exposes-the-political-purpose-of-californias-taxpayer-funded-anti-gun-factoid-factory\" title=\"NRA-ILA: Newsom Exposes the Political Purpose of California\u2019s Taxpayer-funded Anti-gun Factoid Factory\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Sacramento Bee<\/a>&nbsp;reported, \u201c\u2018We\u2019re up against a gun epidemic.\u2019 Gavin Newsom links rise in homicides to firearm sales.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Newsom\u2019s lazy assertion that the increase in gun sales in 2020 led to an increase in homicides wouldn\u2019t normally be notable. However, this time Newsom\u2019s baseless deflection is completely at odds with research authored by the Director of the Firearm Violence Research Center&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/health.ucdavis.edu\/team\/search\/241\/garen-wintemute---emergency-medicine-sacramento\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"nra-ila-newsom-exposes-the-political-purpose-of-californias-taxpayer-funded-anti-gun-factoid-factory\" title=\"NRA-ILA: Newsom Exposes the Political Purpose of California\u2019s Taxpayer-funded Anti-gun Factoid Factory\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Garen Wintemute<\/a>. The UC Davis-based center is California\u2019s official state-funded anti-gun firearm factoid factory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On July 5, the journal\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/injepijournal.biomedcentral.com\/articles\/10.1186\/s40621-021-00339-5#Sec16\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"nra-ila-newsom-exposes-the-political-purpose-of-californias-taxpayer-funded-anti-gun-factoid-factory\" title=\"NRA-ILA: Newsom Exposes the Political Purpose of California\u2019s Taxpayer-funded Anti-gun Factoid Factory\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Injury Epidemiology<\/a>\u00a0published \u201cFirearm purchasing and firearm violence during the coronavirus pandemic in the United States: a cross-sectional study.\u201d As noted, the paper\u2019s authors included Garen Wintemute along with a host of others associated with the taxpayer-funded center. At the state level, the magnitude of the increase in purchasing was not associated with the magnitude of the increase in firearm violence.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The governor had previously touted the importance of the center\u2019s work. On&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.ca.gov\/2019\/06\/25\/ahead-of-implementation-date-of-new-gun-safety-policies-in-california-governor-newsom-and-state-leaders-reaffirm-commitment-to-ending-epidemic-of-gun-violence\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"nra-ila-newsom-exposes-the-political-purpose-of-californias-taxpayer-funded-anti-gun-factoid-factory\" title=\"NRA-ILA: Newsom Exposes the Political Purpose of California\u2019s Taxpayer-funded Anti-gun Factoid Factory\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">June 25<\/a>&nbsp;and October 11, 2019,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.ca.gov\/2019\/10\/11\/governor-gavin-newsom-signs-gun-violence-prevention-legislation\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"nra-ila-newsom-exposes-the-political-purpose-of-californias-taxpayer-funded-anti-gun-factoid-factory\" title=\"NRA-ILA: Newsom Exposes the Political Purpose of California\u2019s Taxpayer-funded Anti-gun Factoid Factory\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Newsom boasted<\/a>&nbsp;about advancing a budget that \u201csecures long-term funding for the Firearm Violence Research Center at the University of California, Davis.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The research center was established in 2016 with $5 million in tax revenue. The 2019 Newsom budget allocated another&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/asmdc.org\/press-releases\/berman-successfully-advocates-nearly-4m-state-budget-gun-violence-prevention\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"nra-ila-newsom-exposes-the-political-purpose-of-californias-taxpayer-funded-anti-gun-factoid-factory\" title=\"NRA-ILA: Newsom Exposes the Political Purpose of California\u2019s Taxpayer-funded Anti-gun Factoid Factory\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">$3.85 million in taxpayer money to the gun control project<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Newsom\u2019s July 21 comments expose the political purpose of the California Firearm Violence Research Center. Anti-gun lawmakers fund the project with the understanding that its \u201cresearch\u201d will provide a scientific and impartial veneer to their pre-existing policy agenda.
