There are certain advantages to having a senile president, not the least of which is his tendency to unintentionally let the cat out of the bag.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

President Joe Biden bumbled through a CNN \u201ctown hall\u201d event last night, and along with his usual word salads, he appeared to voice support for a nationwide handgun ban.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI’m the only guy that ever got passed legislation, when I was a senator, to make sure we eliminated assault weapons. The idea you need a weapon that can have the ability to fire 20, 30, 40, 50, 120 shots from that weapon, whether — whether it’s a .9 millimeter pistol or whether it’s a rifle, is ridiculous,\u201d he said, adding: \u201cI’m continuing to push to eliminate the sale of those things.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It\u2019s unclear whether by \u201cthose things\u201d the president means rifles and pistols or magazines that hold \u201c20, 30, 40\u2026\u201d rounds. Biden\u2019s gun control plan does not express support for a handgun ban, but he does call for a ban on \u201chigh-capacity\u201d magazines. Given that state-level \u201chigh-capacity\u201d magazine bans outlaw anything that can hold more than 10 rounds, it seems likely that Biden would want the same ban nationally if given the chance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Banning handguns outright would be a far riskier political move. Support for gun control in general has waned<\/a> in the past year, and opposition to a handgun ban has grown steadily since the 1950\u2019s. Last year, a full 74 percent of Americans opposed such a ban, while only 25 percent supported it, according to Gallup<\/a>. That\u2019s the second-highest opposition ever recorded since Gallup started asking the question in 1959.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Suggesting a handgun ban wasn\u2019t the president\u2019s only questionable gun-related comment. At the beginning of his comments on firearms, he made a distinction between \u201ccrime\u201d and \u201cgun violence\u201d to argue that guns are to blame for the spike in murders over the last year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAs you know, because you’re so involved, actually crime is down, gun violence and murder rates are up. Guns,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He also appeared to claim sole responsibility for the 1994 \u201cassault weapons\u201d ban.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI’m the only guy that ever got passed legislation, when I was a senator, to make sure we eliminated assault weapons,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In reality, Biden was joined by 47 other senators in voting for the legislation, and three former presidents, including Ronald Reagan<\/a>, voiced support for the ban to get it through Congress.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Biden also reiterated his commitment to going after gun dealers across America and made a vague reference go \u201cghost guns.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI’ve gotten ATF out, Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms. I have them increase their budget and increase their capacity, along with the Justice Department, to go after the gun shops that are not abiding by the law of doing background checks,\u201d he said. \u201cWe’re going to do major investigations and shut those guys down and put some of them in jail for what they’re doing, selling these weapons.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Biden also admitted (apparently unintentionally) that criminals almost always acquire their guns illegally.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe people who, in fact, are using those weapons are acquiring them illegally. Illegally,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If Biden knows criminals acquire guns illegally, it\u2019s unclear why he has spent so much of his career supporting gun control measures that only affect law-abiding citizens.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Not surprisingly, neither the attendees nor the moderator, Don Lemon, thought to ask about this clear contradiction. Even if they did, it\u2019s unlikely Biden would be able to form a coherent response.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
