Sen. Dick Durbin believes he knows why violence is on the rise in major cities around America. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe have more guns in this nation than anyone who wrote the Second Amendment could ever have envisioned,\u201d the Democratic Senator who represents Illinois told Capitol Connection<\/a> in a recent interview.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe have over 400 million guns in a nation of 330 million people,\u201d Durbin continued. \u201cAnd how easy are they to get? Just in the last week or two, we have seen hundreds of guns being confiscated by the Chicago police and community after community that have just too damn many guns out there.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We need more blanketed gun confiscation is what Durbin is evidently suggesting.  Because in his mind, the best way to tackle crime is to reduce the total number of firearms in civilian hands.   <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Of course, this flies in the face of data from the last few decades that indicate as the number of firearms in circulation increased, including AR-pattern rifles<\/a> (what Democrats refer to as “assault weapons”), violent crime actually decreased. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Turns out the opposite of what Durbin is alleging is possibly true. More guns in the hands of law-abiding citizens has the capacity to create a safer society. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Because only recently, over the past 18 months or so — amidst COIVD lockdowns (where inmates were released from prison), civil unrest sparked by George Floyd protests, a reduction in policing due <\/a>to activists groups calling for the elimination of law enforcement (the “Defund the Police” movement) — have we witnessed a steep uptick in crime. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

All of those are far more likely causes for the violence than the number of guns in society or the boom in gun sales over that same period of time, as GunsAmerica has pointed out<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But that doesn’t fit the anti-gun agenda of the Democratic party. Therefore, Sen. Durbin won’t place blame where it belongs but will instead call out law-abiding gun owners. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI\u2019m not going to suggest that there are people who say, \u2018I\u2019ve got to protect myself because I can\u2019t trust the police to do it,\u2019 or, \u2018I don\u2019t want the police to do it. I want to take care of it myself,’\u201d Durbin said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThere are lots of different reasons [why people choose to exercise their 2A rights]. I\u2019m not going to be able to analyze it,\u201d he said. \u201cBut when it gets down to it, we\u2019re crazy if we don\u2019t do background checks on the people who buy guns. Anybody who is a convicted felon or mentally unstable should not be able to buy a gun. And yet when it comes to gun shows, orders over the internet, these ghost guns, we\u2019re not enforcing that. That is just unacceptable. That ought to be the starting point of our conversation.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In other words, the best way to stop felons and mental defectives — those who cannot purchase a firearm from an FFL and those who are already prohibited from possessing firearms under federal law — is to punish responsible citizens by attacking 2A rights via criminalizing private transfers, banning gun shows and Internet sales<\/a>, and prohibiting DIY gun kits<\/a>. Oh, and don’t forget more wholesale gun confiscation<\/a>. Because guns and gun owners are the problem. There are just too damn many of them. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
