Firearms are an undeniable part of the American identity thanks to the Second Amendment and the nation\u2019s spirit of independence and self-sufficiency. The United States was forged in steel and gunpowder, and from the Colonial Era onward the history of America has been tied to the history of the gun.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n<p>Which guns are most American? Sure, that\u2019s a big question to tackle, but Independence Day is all about celebrating the grand sweep of the American story, so let\u2019s take a look at seven firearms that decisively shaped America and shaped the perception of the United States around the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"the-kentucky-rifle\">The Kentucky Rifle<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The first uniquely American firearm was born in the backcountry of 18<sup>th<\/sup>&nbsp;Century Pennsylvania. Popularly known as the Kentucky Rifle, or Pennsylvania Rifle,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.rockislandauction.com\/riac-blog\/the-piedmont-collection-of-world-class-kentucky-rifles\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"the-7-most-american-guns\" title=\"The 7 Most American Guns\">the American Long Rifle<\/a>&nbsp;became a symbol of frontier self-reliance and rugged American individualism, and the gun went on to be a decisive force-multiplier in the Revolutionary War. The first firearm to be regularly fitted with an open rear sight, these&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.rockislandauction.com\/riac-blog\/running-deer-rifle-an-american-folk-art-legend\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"the-7-most-american-guns\" title=\"The 7 Most American Guns\">elegant flintlocks<\/a>&nbsp;were favored by American frontiersmen who required the ability to shoot accurately up to 200 yards when hunting in the Virginia wilderness. It turned out that range also worked well for picking off British officers, and General George Washington was quick to take advantage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><strong><em>The Kentucky Rifle was the first distinctly American firearm.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Most Yankee soldiers during the War of Independence carried smoothbore long arms like their&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.rockislandauction.com\/riac-blog\/military-long-guns-british-empire\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"the-7-most-american-guns\" title=\"The 7 Most American Guns\">British counterparts<\/a>, but small groups of riflemen were deployed to harass the British from outside effective musket range. Washington recruited as many long rifle hunters as he could, and the 1,400 or so patriots who answered his call were a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.rockislandauction.com\/riac-blog\/the-first-truly-american-firearm-the-kentucky-rifle\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"the-7-most-american-guns\" title=\"The 7 Most American Guns\">deciding factor in winning the Revolution<\/a>&nbsp;and ensuring the spirit of \u201976 lived on. Dime novels and newspapers of the period helped popularize the iconic revolver, and Hollywood made it a legend. \u201cJudge Colt and His Jury of Six\u201d became a symbol of justice and lawlessness on the American frontier, adopted by cowboys, gamblers, lawmen, and desperados as the Land of Stars and Stripes pushed ever westward.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Peacemaker. The six shooter. \u201cThe great equalizer.\u201d The American Army adopted the Colt SAA in July 1873, and a few months later it was offered to the public. The revolver was relatively light, durable,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.rockislandauction.com\/riac-blog\/how-to-function-check-your-colt-single-action-army\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"the-7-most-american-guns\" title=\"The 7 Most American Guns\">easy to shoot and maintain<\/a>, and the new .44&#8211;40 brass cartridge made loading Colts faster than ever. It\u2019s no wonder that the Single Action Army was the official sidearm for the U.S Cavalry for 20 years, and even saw limited service well into the 20th century, including being&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gunsandammo.com\/editorial\/george-s-patton-guns-that-made-him-great\/247778\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"the-7-most-american-guns\" title=\"The 7 Most American Guns\">General George S. Patton\u2019s favored handgun<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><em><strong>The Colt SAA, \u201cThe World\u2019s Right Arm,\u201d was favored by Old West legends like Bat Masterson.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The lore surrounding the Colt SAA revolver grew along with the legend of the American West, and the famous six shooter has been featured in nearly every Hollywood Western film. Presidents like&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.rockislandauction.com\/riac-blog\/roosevelts-colt-single-action-army-revolver\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"the-7-most-american-guns\" title=\"The 7 Most American Guns\">Teddy Roosevelt<\/a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.rockislandauction.com\/detail\/60\/1201\/historic-and-superb-fully-documented-cased-consecutively-seriali\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"the-7-most-american-guns\" title=\"The 7 Most American Guns\">Ronald Reagan<\/a>&nbsp;carried it. Wyatt Earp, Bat Masterson, and Doc Holliday forged their reputations with it. The Single Action Army has been in production on and off for nearly 150 years, and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.colt.com\/series\/SAA_SERIES\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"the-7-most-american-guns\" title=\"The 7 Most American Guns\">it\u2019s still manufactured today<\/a>. Dubbed \u201cthe gun that won the West\u201d, the Winchester \u201973 is the embodiment of American made, and the rugged rifle is prominently featured in many Westerns alongside the Colt SAA. The Model 1873 was also chambered in .44-40, a hefty upgrade for the time, and the same ammo used by the Colt SAA.
