President Joe Biden hasn\u2019t been shy about his willingness to use every tool in his executive arsenal<\/a> to advance his gun control agenda. A newly released White House document suggests that gun owners should expect his next gambit to involve a crackdown on gun ownership and \u201cdomestic terrorism.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the document<\/a>, titled \u201cNational Strategy for Countering Domestic Terrorism,\u201d policy analysts at Biden\u2019s National Security Council recommend a wide variety of strategies to curb domestic terrorism, including restrictions on gun rights.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhile those who break the law in furtherance of domestic terrorism must face investigation and prosecution for their crimes, it is equally important that the Federal Government engage in efforts to prevent individuals from being drawn into the grip of domestic terrorism in the first instance,\u201d the document reads. \u201cThat means reducing both supply and demand of recruitment materials by limiting widespread availability online and bolstering resilience to it by those who nonetheless encounter it, among other measures. It also means reducing access to assault weapons and high\u2013capacity magazines and enforcing legal prohibitions that keep firearms out of dangerous hands.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

With this statement, Biden\u2019s White House explicitly connects domestic terrorism recruitment efforts with gun culture. In his attempt to prevent people from being \u201cdrawn into the grip of domestic terrorism,\u201d Biden seeks to \u201creduce access to assault weapons.\u201d There is no connection between these two topics unless one sees all \u201cassault weapon\u201d owners as potential targets for domestic terrorist recruiters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That connection, of course, is patently ridiculous. Almost 20 million modern sporting rifles have been sold<\/a> in the last three decades, and the National Shooting Sports Foundation reports<\/a> that in 2012, one in five rifles sold were modern sporting rifles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

While the federal government has so far refused to release hard data<\/a> on the real scope of the threat from domestic terrorists, it\u2019s safe to say that the number of law-abiding modern rifle owners dwarfs the number of domestic terrorists in the United States. There is also no evidence that purchasing an AR-15 or an AK-47 predicts acts of terrorism.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

In addition, according to the Center for Strategic & International Studies<\/a>, firearms aren\u2019t the favored weapon of domestic terrorists. Of the domestic terrorist incidents in 2020, both far-left and far-right extremists preferred explosives and incendiary devices over firearms. Strangely, the White House\u2019s strategy document makes no mention of limiting access to explosives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Of course, none of this is likely to stop the Biden administration from vilifying law-abiding gun owners. In a recent address, the president justified his gun-control agenda by arguing that gun owners would need \u201cnukes and F-15s\u201d to resist government tyranny.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
