<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n

Tragedy in Olde Town Arvada, Colorado, this week as police fatally wounded a good guy with a gun after he stopped a cop killer dead in his tracks. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

John Hurley, 40, was shopping at the Arvada Army Navy Surplus store on Monday afternoon when shots rang out across the street at a plaza.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

At that scene, a shooter, later identified as 59-year-old Ronald Troyke, ambushed a local police officer named Gordon Beesley.  Officer Beesley would not survive the attack. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Before Troyke could sow more carnage, Hurley jumped into action, according to witness Bill Troyanos, an employee of the surplus store. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cHe did not hesitate; he didn\u2019t stand there and think about it. He totally heard the gunfire, went to the door, saw the shooter and immediately ran in that direction,\u201d Troyanos told Denver7<\/a>. \u201cI just want to make sure his family knows how heroic he was.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mr. Hurley instructed bystanders to take cover while he prepared to confront the killer.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cHe turned back and looked towards everybody at the restaurant and told us that he (the gunman) is coming, that he is coming back and that we should get inside,\u201d said a manager of a nearby business who asked not to be identified. \u201cI ran to the back of the store, closer to the alley, kind of ‘nooked’ myself in a corner just to feel safe.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Troyanos watched from the store as Hurley neutralize the threat. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cMr. Hurley shot him. I think I heard 6 shots from his gun, maybe 5,\u201d Troyanos said. The suspect slumped against a parked car. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

An investigation is ongoing to determine what happened next. But local news station Denver7 is reporting that a responding officer mistakenly shot Hurley.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/p>\n\n\n\n

During a Tuesday press conference, Arvada Police Chief Link Strate called Hurley a \u201ctrue hero who likely disrupted what could have been a larger loss of life.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Chief Strate also commented on a potential motive for the initial assault on the officer.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cOfficer Beasley was ambushed by someone who expressed hatred of police officers,\u201d Strate said, noting that investigators found a note written by the suspect that contained threats against Arvada police officers. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Erin Hurley, John\u2019s sister, declined to give a comment to The Associated Press<\/a>, but wrote the following statement on Facebook.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cJohnny acted without hesitation and possibly saved many lives while sacrificing his own,\u201d she said. Friends have started a GoFundMe page<\/a> for the Hurley Family.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Arvada Police Department, meanwhile, is hoping to complete the investigation in the coming days. <\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n
