The chief of the Miami Police Department is blaming two high-profile drive-by shootings over the weekend on a supposed lack of federal gun control. The incidents left three people dead and at least 26 people wounded.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt’s just an indication of the problem we have with the scourge of gun violence in this country that we need to do much more at a federal level to stop,\u201d Art Acevedo, chief of the Miami Police Department, told CBS\u2019 Face the Nation<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe need to have universal background checks. We need to make burglarizing these licensed gun stores a federal crime with mandatory sentencing. And we need the federal government and both sides to address this issue,\u201d he said. \u201cBecause without legislation, without certainty as it relates to holding these criminal accountable, we\u2019re never going to get through this summer without much more death and destruction.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On Sunday, three men with guns opened fire in a drive-by shooting at a banquet hall that left three people dead and 23 wounded. On Monday, another drive-by shooting left two people wounded while another attempted robbery turned into a gunfight.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The three men responsible for the Sunday incident are still at large. Police say they exited a white Nissan Pathfinder and opened fire on a crowd outside a banquet hall with handguns and \u201cassault rifles.\u201d Law enforcement do not know how the men obtained their firearms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Police say they do not know the precise motivation of the murderers, but that it likely stemmed from a dispute between two gangs. The men waited in their car for about 40 minutes before exiting and firing on the crowd.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Several people in the crowd were armed, and they opened fire on the attackers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The banquet hall shooting was the sixth known instance of gun-related violence since Thursday, according to the Miami Herald<\/a>. County Commissioner Keon Hardemon called the string of attacks \u201cclear… acts of domestic terrorism.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Like most major American cities, Miami saw a sharp uptick in homicides in 2020 while the nation\u2019s gun laws remained virtually the same. There were 272 homicides through December 24, 2020, while the previous year saw only 241, according to The Miami Times<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Federal gun control laws aren\u2019t the only thing chief Acevedo pinned as responsible for his city\u2019s rise in violent crime. He also called out the nation\u2019s criminal justice system for allowing felons to operate on the streets while their cases are stuck in court.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cOur criminal court system across this country is absolutely at a standstill. They are not moving cases, thousands of felons running around, and cases languishing three to five, six years before they even go to court. We\u2019ve got to get our system back on track,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
