Violence was avoided in an anti-Semitic attack in Florida when a citizen pulled out his firearm.<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

Attacks against Jewish Americans are on the rise in cities and towns across the United States. Encouraged by the armed conflict between Israel and Palestine, groups of anti-Semitic thugs are viciously attacking Jews without any provocation\u2014and often in cities where citizens cannot exercise their Second Amendment right to armed self-defense.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Last week in New York City, for example, a Jewish man in Times Square was punched, kicked, pepper-sprayed and hit with crutches<\/a> after emerging from a Subway station. In another incident in NYC over the weekend, three men harassed a group of Jewish men at a synagogue<\/a> by yelling, \u201cFree Palestine, kill all the Jews.\u201d Forty-five minutes later, the men attacked two Jewish teenagers by punching them, yelling at them, and chasing them with baseball bats.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Anti-Defamation League reports that they\u2019re tracking a \u201cdangerous and drastic surge in anti-Jewish hate\u201d around the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe are tracking acts of harassment, vandalism and violence as well as a torrent of online abuse,\u201d ADL CEO Jonathan Greenblatt said in a statement Thursday. \u201cIt\u2019s happening around the world \u2014 from London to Los Angeles, from France to Florida, in big cities like NYC and in small towns, and across every social media platform.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Floridians, of course, have a recourse that residents of other places don\u2019t: the right to armed self-defense.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A similar anti-Semitic attack began to play out in Miami Beach on Tuesday, but a man with a firearm stopped it before it escalated to violence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Eric Orgen was walking with a friend, his wife Karen, and his daughter Jamie, around 8pm when they were stopped and harassed by four men in an SUV.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cA white SUV with 4 Middle Eastern looking males in their early 20s pulled up alongside us and started screaming \u2018fuck you Jew,\u2019 \u2018die Jew,\u2019 and \u2018free Palestine.\u2019 They then yelled they were going to rape Karen and Jamie. They then threw garbage at us out the window as well as a water bottle,\u201d Orgen explained in a Facebook post<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI made sure my wife, my daughter and our friend were behind me, so that if anything happened I would take the brunt of it,\u201d Orgen, who is a business consultant and volunteer EMT, told the Miami Herald<\/a>. \u201cI was going to protect my family.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Before the situation got even worse, however, a man driving an Audi behind the SUV saw what was happening and pulled out his sidearm. The SUV immediately drove away, and the man in the Audi began to chase it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Orgen called the armed citizen a \u201chero.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cSo thankful that a total stranger stepped up to protect us!\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Where the men in New York City had no way to defend themselves against a group of attackers, the Good Samaritan in the Audi chased away four men by simply showing his firearm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This is where anti-gun activists get the Second Amendment wrong. In the 21st<\/sup> Century, tyranny in the United States likely won\u2019t involve martial law or violent takeover by government soldiers. More likely, as we\u2019ve seen over the last year, citizens will be forced to defend themselves from violent activist groups that the government refuses to control. Whether it\u2019s Jewish Americans defending themselves from anti-Semites or business owners defending themselves from rioters and looters, the American people need the tools and ability to own and carry firearms\u2014which is exactly what the Second Amendment was designed to do.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Anti-gun zealots will paint fever-dream nightmares about Wild West style shootouts if more law-abiding Americans are permitted to defend themselves with firearms in America\u2019s major cities. But the recent incident in Florida should be instructive: the man in the Audi never fired a shot. He used his firearm to defend others by simply pulling it out. Once the anti-Semites saw that Orgen and his family would be defended with a gun, they fled.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

None of this means we should abandon long-term solutions that will decrease the influence of anti-Semitism and other violent ideologies. But in the meantime, we can\u2019t leave victims without a means of defense. As local, state, and federal law enforcement come under the control of radical politicians, we must redouble our efforts to ensure that all Americans, no matter where they live, have the means to effectively defend themselves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
