{"id":145548,"date":"2021-05-13T15:50:11","date_gmt":"2021-05-13T19:50:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.gunsamerica.com\/digest\/?p=145548"},"modified":"2021-05-13T15:50:11","modified_gmt":"2023-09-07T12:05:27","slug":"gun-buybacks-dont-reduce-crime-says-new-study","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/gunsamerica.com\/digest\/gun-buybacks-dont-reduce-crime-says-new-study\/","title":{"rendered":"Gun \u2018Buybacks\u2019 Don\u2019t Reduce Crime, Says New Study"},"content":{"rendered":"\n\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"750\" height=\"430\" title=\"Gun \u2018Buybacks\u2019 Don\u2019t Reduce Crime, Says New Study\" src=\"https:\/\/www.gunsamerica.com\/digest\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/Screen-Shot-2021-05-13-at-3.37.40-PM-1.jpg\" alt=\"Gun \u2018Buybacks\u2019 Don\u2019t Reduce Crime, Says New Study\" class=\"wp-image-145550\" srcset=\"https:\/\/gunsamerica.com\/digest\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/Screen-Shot-2021-05-13-at-3.37.40-PM-1.jpg 750w, https:\/\/gunsamerica.com\/digest\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/Screen-Shot-2021-05-13-at-3.37.40-PM-1-400x229.jpg 400w, https:\/\/gunsamerica.com\/digest\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/Screen-Shot-2021-05-13-at-3.37.40-PM-1-150x86.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 750px) 100vw, 750px\" \/><figcaption>(<em>Photo: ABC Action News<\/em>)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>GunsAmerica knows what you know.&nbsp; Gun \u2018buyback\u2019 programs (GBP) are utterly useless.&nbsp; But it appears that others are catching on as well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A new, rather exhaustive, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nber.org\/papers\/w28763\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"gun-buybacks-dont-reduce-crime-says-new-study\" title=\"Gun \u2018Buybacks\u2019 Don\u2019t Reduce Crime, Says New Study\">study<\/a> of GBP from the National Bureau of Economic Research found that \u201cUsing data from the National Incident Based Reporting System, we find no evidence that GBPs reduce gun crime.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cGiven our estimated null findings, with 95 percent confidence, we can rule out decreases in firearm-related crime of greater than 1.3 percent during the year following a buyback,\u201d the authors of the study continued. \u201cUsing data from the National Vital Statistics System, we also find no evidence that GBPs reduce suicides or homicides where a firearm was involved.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We shared the study with Mark Oliva, the director of public affairs for the National Shooting Sports Foundation, the firearms industry trade association.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThese so-called \u201cgun buybacks\u201d are gun control theater,\u201d Oliva told GunsAmerica via email.&nbsp; \u201cThey are a waste of taxpayer money and are a charade perpetuated by gun control politicians who want to appear as if they\u2019re doing something, yet not actually tackling the difficult work of reducing crime.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThese shams propel the narrative held by gun control groups that it is the firearm that\u2019s the problem. This study shreds that lie. Empirical data shows this to be untrue. Those firearms that are turned in are old, rusted, and some are literally held together by duct tape,&#8221; explained Oliva.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Those firearms are collected with a &#8216;no questions asked&#8217; policy, meaning firearms that are turned into government authorities are never run through the ATF\u2019s Firearm Tracing Center to verify those firearms were ever used in a crime. That\u2019s valuable crime-fighting evidence that is being lost. The politicians putting on these events are the same ones who shout that every firearm must be traceable with serial numbers,&#8221; he added.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I found this old <em>ABC Action News <\/em>report from 2013 on the overall ineffectiveness of buybacks (see below). The worthlessness of GBP is old news yet they&#8217;re<a href=\"https:\/\/wvua23.com\/birmingham-group-gets-38-weapons-in-weekend-gun-buyback\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"gun-buybacks-dont-reduce-crime-says-new-study\" title=\"Gun \u2018Buybacks\u2019 Don\u2019t Reduce Crime, Says New Study\"> being held with regularity around the country<\/a>.
