A Virginia police officer lost his job this week after a data breach at a crowdfunding site revealed that he had donated $25 to Kyle Rittenhouse\u2019s legal fund and posted a note supporting the teen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lieutenant William Kelly worked in internal affairs for the Norfolk Police Department but was placed on administrative leave last week after The Guardian reported<\/a> on the donation information obtained from the crowdfunding site GiveSendGo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cGod bless. Thank you for your courage. Keep your head up. You\u2019ve done nothing wrong,\u201d Kelly posted along with his donation. \u201cEvery rank and file police officer supports you. Don\u2019t be discouraged by actions of the political class of law enforcement leadership.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Just days after being placed on administrative leave, Kelly\u2019s employer fired him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cChief Larry Boone and I have concluded Lt. Kelly\u2019s actions are in violation of City and departmental policies,” Chip Filer, the city manager of Norfolk, said in a statement<\/a>. “His egregious comments erode the trust between the Norfolk Police Department and those they are sworn to serve. The City of Norfolk has a standard of behavior for all employees, and we will hold staff accountable.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Norfolk Police Chief Larry Boone admitted that their actions were taken in large part due to the public perception of Rittenhouse\u2019s actions in Kenosha on August 25 of last year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“A police department cannot do its job when the public loses trust with those whose duty is to serve and protect them,” Boone said. “We do not want perceptions of any individual officer to undermine the relations between the Norfolk Police Department and the community.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rittenhouse is facing several felony charges of homicide and intentional homicide in connection with his actions at a Black Lives Matter protest in Kenosha, Wisconsin. Rittenhouse shot and killed two men and seriously injured another with an AR-15.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Available video evidence<\/a> suggests that Rittenhouse acted in self-defense after being pursued by multiple armed assailants. At the very least, the facts of the case have not been adjudicated, so it\u2019s unclear how the Norfolk Police Department will justify firing an officer for acting in his personal capacity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The information about Kelly\u2019s donation was given to The Guardian by a \u201ctransparency group\u201d called Distributed Denial of Secrets, which the Department of Homeland Security\u2019s Office of Intelligence and Analysis has described<\/a> as a \u201ccriminal hacker group.\u201d The data breach revealed information and identities of some of Rittenhouse\u2019s donors who had tried to use the website’s anonymity feature to conceal their identities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In total, Rittenhouse received over $500,000 to help pay his legal fees.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
