Shannon Watts came out firing this week against the National Rifle Association in an interview with MSNBC\u2019s Rachel Maddow<\/a>.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Watts was relishing in the fact that the execs from the nation\u2019s gun lobby were testifying in federal court Tuesday and Wednesday at the organization\u2019s bankruptcy hearing down in Dallas, TX. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWayne LaPierre is a man who has spent years and made millions of dollars saying the only protection from a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun,\u201d said the founder of Moms Demand Action. \u201cAnd basically what he\u2019s saying now is the only protection is actually a good friend with a 100-foot yacht.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

NRA is seeking to move its charter from New York down to Texas to avoid, what it\u2019s characterized as, \u201cpolitically motivated\u201d attacks from Empire State bureaucrats, specifically state Attorney General Letitia James.\u00a0 \u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A.G. James sued the NRA<\/a> in August of 2020, seeking to dissolve the nation\u2019s oldest civil rights organization.\u00a0 As part of the lawsuit, James accused execs of mismanaging donor dollars to the benefit of leadership. \u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In a 2019 tax filing, submitted last year, the NRA acknowledged following an internal audit<\/a> that some executives received \u201cexcess benefits\u201d while on the job, including current Exec. Vice President Wayne Lapierre.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, the filing made it clear that LaPierre has since \u201ccorrected\u201d his misappropriation of funds, cutting a $300,000 personal check directly to the organization for travel expenses from 2015-2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Watts couldn’t help but to gloat.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The NRA\u2019s \u201clawyer has even said we should expect more \u2018cringeworthy\u2019 revelations. So, the NRA\u2019s best argument seems to be: \u2018yes, we looted, yes, we set this horrific fire, but look how hard we\u2019re trying to put it out.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cLet\u2019s be clear, the NRA used to be a powerbroker and now they\u2019re just broken,\u201d she added. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

NRA is maintaining that its righted all of its wrongs and that its members are looking forward to starting anew in the Lone Star State.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe message is loud and clear: The NRA board is united in support of the course set by its leadership,\u201d said Charles Cotton, an NRA board member before the start of the hearing.   <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Along with throwing jabs at LaPierre, Watts also wanted to use this as an opportunity to make headway on the gun-control front.\u00a0 Criminalizing private transfers remains her organization\u2019s highest priority. \u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhile [the NRA] is busy in bankruptcy court, our 6 million supporters are demanding action, demanding more than thoughts and prayers,\u201d she said.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIn fact we have this Road Trip for Background Checks and over the next 10 days our volunteers are going across the country \u2014 60 stops in 22 states, very COVID-safe, about 16,000 miles long \u2014 and we\u2019re telling D.C. where this will culminate that we want our Senators to act. And this is the perfect time,\u201d she continued. \u201cOur organization and movement is stronger than it\u2019s ever been, the NRA is weaker than they\u2019ve ever been.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
