{"id":142235,"date":"2021-02-23T14:58:06","date_gmt":"2021-02-23T19:58:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.gunsamerica.com\/digest\/?p=142235"},"modified":"2021-02-23T14:58:06","modified_gmt":"2023-09-07T09:05:59","slug":"everytown-tries-to-deliver-death-blow-to-nra-in-new-attack-ad","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/gunsamerica.com\/digest\/everytown-tries-to-deliver-death-blow-to-nra-in-new-attack-ad\/","title":{"rendered":"Everytown Tries to Deliver Death Blow to NRA in New Attack Ad"},"content":{"rendered":"\n\n\n\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Everytown for Gun Safety is going on the offensive in a new campaign targeting its nemesis, the National Rifle Association.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Bloomberg-funded group released an attack ad (see above) this week along with a <a href=\"https:\/\/everytown.org\/documents\/2021\/02\/nra-bankrupt-billboard.png\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"everytown-tries-to-deliver-death-blow-to-nra-in-new-attack-ad\" title=\"Everytown Tries to Deliver Death Blow to NRA in New Attack Ad\">billboard<\/a> designed to spotlight the NRA\u2019s money problems over the past few years. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cToday\u2019s NRA isn\u2019t the organization many Americans grew up with, and today\u2019s NRA members have been fleeced,\u201d said John Feinblatt, president of Everytown for Gun Safety in a press release obtained by GunsAmerica. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWith this ad campaign, we\u2019re showing NRA members where their dues have been going, and we\u2019re reminding lawmakers that the NRA has never been weaker \u2014 and the time for action is now,&#8221; he continued.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">SEE ALSO: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gunsamerica.com\/digest\/nra-files-bankruptcy-in-new-york-plans-to-move-to-texas\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"everytown-tries-to-deliver-death-blow-to-nra-in-new-attack-ad\" title=\"Everytown Tries to Deliver Death Blow to NRA in New Attack Ad\">NRA Files Bankruptcy in New York, Plans to Move to Texas<\/a><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Everytown makes the following claims with respect to the NRA&#8217;s purported mismanagement of donor dollars: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Only <a href=\"https:\/\/t.e2ma.net\/click\/574zff\/5f3red\/x12zuq\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"everytown-tries-to-deliver-death-blow-to-nra-in-new-attack-ad\" title=\"Everytown Tries to Deliver Death Blow to NRA in New Attack Ad\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">10% of what the NRA spends<\/a> goes toward safety, education and training;<\/li><li>The NRA spent <a href=\"https:\/\/t.e2ma.net\/click\/574zff\/5f3red\/du3zuq\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"everytown-tries-to-deliver-death-blow-to-nra-in-new-attack-ad\" title=\"Everytown Tries to Deliver Death Blow to NRA in New Attack Ad\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">more than $274,000<\/a> to purchase designer suits for CEO Wayne LaPierre from a Beverly Hills boutique;<\/li><li>The NRA spent <a href=\"https:\/\/t.e2ma.net\/click\/574zff\/5f3red\/tm4zuq\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"everytown-tries-to-deliver-death-blow-to-nra-in-new-attack-ad\" title=\"Everytown Tries to Deliver Death Blow to NRA in New Attack Ad\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">more than $243,000<\/a> on LaPierre trips to exotic locales like Hungry, Greece, and the Bahamas, <a href=\"https:\/\/t.e2ma.net\/click\/574zff\/5f3red\/9e5zuq\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"everytown-tries-to-deliver-death-blow-to-nra-in-new-attack-ad\" title=\"Everytown Tries to Deliver Death Blow to NRA in New Attack Ad\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">spending millions<\/a> more on private jet travel;<\/li><li>LaPierre has already secured a post-employment golden parachute from the NRA, which will pay him <a href=\"https:\/\/t.e2ma.net\/click\/574zff\/5f3red\/p75zuq\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"everytown-tries-to-deliver-death-blow-to-nra-in-new-attack-ad\" title=\"Everytown Tries to Deliver Death Blow to NRA in New Attack Ad\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">at least $17.4 million<\/a> even after he leaves the NRA; and<\/li><li>The NRA continues to pay <a href=\"https:\/\/t.e2ma.net\/click\/574zff\/5f3red\/5z6zuq\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"everytown-tries-to-deliver-death-blow-to-nra-in-new-attack-ad\" title=\"Everytown Tries to Deliver Death Blow to NRA in New Attack Ad\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">tens of millions<\/a> a year to high-priced lawyers.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cNRA leaders spending members\u2019 dues on luxury goods like yachts and Italian suits and exotic vacations \u2014 all while shortchanging gun safety and training programs \u2014 makes them more like Bond villains than nonprofit employees,\u201d said Shannon Watts, founder of Moms Demand Action, a grassroots offshoot of Everytown. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe NRA has betrayed its members for decades, turning the organization into a personal piggy bank for its executives and vendors,&#8221; she added.  &#8220;And through this ad campaign, we\u2019re making sure NRA members know it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Supporters of the nation&#8217;s gun lobby would probably argue that Everytown&#8217;s damning accusations are old news.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Many of the stories Bloomberg&#8217;s minions cite are from several years ago and the NRA is now in the process of putting its checkered financial past behind it and getting its house in order.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As part of righting the ship, the NRA <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/politics\/nra-irs-disclosure-990\/2020\/11\/25\/50521108-2d34-11eb-9c71-ccf2c0b8d571_story.html\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"everytown-tries-to-deliver-death-blow-to-nra-in-new-attack-ad\" title=\"Everytown Tries to Deliver Death Blow to NRA in New Attack Ad\">admitted in a 2019 tax filing<\/a> that executives received &#8220;excess benefits&#8221; his misappropriation <\/a>of funds by cutting a $300,000 personal check to the NRA for travel expenses from 2015-2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>LaPierre&#8217;s mea culpa coincides with the announcement that NRA would file for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gunsamerica.com\/digest\/nra-files-bankruptcy-in-new-york-plans-to-move-to-texas\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"everytown-tries-to-deliver-death-blow-to-nra-in-new-attack-ad\" title=\"Everytown Tries to Deliver Death Blow to NRA in New Attack Ad\">voluntary chapter 11 bankruptcy<\/a> and leave its incorporated home of New York for the Lone Star State.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe NRA announced it will reorganize the Association as a Texas nonprofit to abandon the corrupt political and regulatory environment in New York. This action will ensure our continued success as the nation\u2019s leading advocate for constitutional freedom,\u201d LaPierre said in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gunsamerica.com\/digest\/nra-files-bankruptcy-in-new-york-plans-to-move-to-texas\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"everytown-tries-to-deliver-death-blow-to-nra-in-new-attack-ad\" title=\"Everytown Tries to Deliver Death Blow to NRA in New Attack Ad\">January letter<\/a> obtained by GunsAmerica.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The greener pastures of Texas are what is prompting the move, not reports that NRA is out of money, insisted LaPierre. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe NRA is not financially insolvent,&#8221; he said. &#8220;In fact, this move comes at a time when the NRA is in its strongest financial condition in years.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>LaPierre ended the letter with cautionary advisement that seemingly presaged the Everytown barrage.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cDo not believe everything you hear in the media. We fully expect our adversaries to try to gain some sort of perceived advantage over the NRA by mischaracterizing this strategic plan. They will portray a so-called &#8216;bankruptcy&#8217; as a negative and, once again, predict our demise,\u201d he warned. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe liberal media, anti-gun gadflies, and left-wing politicians will desperately try to advance another distorted truth about the NRA,\u201d LaPierre concluded.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Time will tell what effect, if any, Everytown&#8217;s campaign has on the NRA.  But truth be told, even if it somehow forces LaPierre to exit, NRA will not lose its political, social, and cultural clout.  The reason is simple.
