(<em>Photo: Facebook\/Plante<\/em>)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The mayor of Montreal is calling on Canada\u2019s Parliament to outright ban handguns.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In front of the city\u2019s executive <a href=\"https:\/\/www.msn.com\/en-ca\/news\/canada\/montreal-mayor-calls-on-ottawa-quebec-to-help-fight-gun-violence-after-teen-s-death\/ar-BB1dzJjj?parent-subcat=tripideas+%22+target%3d%22_blank%22%3eRead+the+Article\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"montreal-mayor-ban-handguns-scourge\" title=\"Montreal Mayor: Ban handguns because \u2018it\u2019s a scourge right now\u2019\">committee on Wednesday,<\/a> Mayor Valerie Plante argued that a nationwide prohibition on pistols and revolvers is the best path forward because localized bans imposed by municipalities aren\u2019t enough to curb gun-related violence. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWith assault weapons, we\u2019re happy that the federal government took their responsibilities, but we ask that it be done also for handguns, because it\u2019s a scourge right now,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s not normal that it\u2019s just cities that legislate one after the other, because guns move around,\u201d she continued.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The city-by-city approach to banning handguns was embraced by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau&#8217;s administration last year. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">SEE ALSO: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gunsamerica.com\/digest\/detroit-area-concealed-carry-applicants-may-have-to-wait-till-2022\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"montreal-mayor-ban-handguns-scourge\" title=\"Montreal Mayor: Ban handguns because \u2018it\u2019s a scourge right now\u2019\">Detroit Area Concealed Carry Applicants May Have to Wait Till 2022<\/a><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Minister of Public Safety Bill Blair said in a <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/BillBlair\/status\/1308896130047053824\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"montreal-mayor-ban-handguns-scourge\" title=\"Montreal Mayor: Ban handguns because \u2018it\u2019s a scourge right now\u2019\">tweet<\/a> on Sept. 23, 2020, \u201cWe are committed to giving municipalities the ability to further restrict handguns and will strengthen measures to control the flow of illegal handguns into Canada.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Canada overhauled its gun laws following the Nova Scotia attack last April, during which a spree-killer posing as a law enforcement officer murdered 22 people and injured three others by setting fires and shooting victims with firearms that were illegally obtained.\u00a0 \u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Immediately following the incident, Trudeau<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gunsamerica.com\/digest\/canadians-petition-to-get-their-guns-back-following-confiscatory-ban\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"montreal-mayor-ban-handguns-scourge\" title=\"Montreal Mayor: Ban handguns because \u2018it\u2019s a scourge right now\u2019\"> via executive fiat<\/a> announced a confiscatory ban on &#8220;assault-style&#8221; weapons.  Current owners of prohibited firearms were given a two-year amnesty period to figure out how to dispose of, sell, or destroy their once lawfully owned property. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The clock is ticking on the seizure of those firearms.  From the sounds of it, handguns could be next.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Based on the numbers provided by <a href=\"https:\/\/thegunblog.ca\/2020\/09\/23\/liberals-reiterate-goal-to-eliminate-handguns-via-municipalities\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"montreal-mayor-ban-handguns-scourge\" title=\"Montreal Mayor: Ban handguns because \u2018it\u2019s a scourge right now\u2019\">TheGunBlog.Ca,<\/a> approximately 300,000 licensed Canadians possess handguns that are registered with the police.  &#8216;They represent 14% of all permit holders and about 1% of the country\u2019s adults,&#8221; according to the site.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"has-text-align-center wp-block-heading\" id=\"block-01de245b-f0c6-4989-bb5b-289f286942da\">***<a href=\"https:\/\/gunsamerica.com\/\" campaign=\"BuySellGA_Register\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\">Buy and Sell on GunsAmerica!<\/a>***<\/h2>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The mayor of Montreal is calling on Canada\u2019s Parliament to outright ban handguns.
