The Denver police have seized firearms from a Colorado man who made threats against the state\u2019s attorney general, but the AG has decided not to press charges. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Law enforcement used Colorado\u2019s new \u201cred flag\u201d law to take the man\u2019s firearms, and he is prohibited from possessing guns for the next year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Bryce Shelby, 28, came onto the FBI\u2019s radar after he hatched a plot with an undercover agent to kill Attorney General Phil Weiser. The self-professed Black Panther planned to shoot Weiser in the head and made multiple trips to the AG\u2019s home. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

If Weiser\u2019s assassination did not achieve Shelby\u2019s political goals, he planned to kill other politicians, including Denver Mayor Michael Hancock and Aurora Mayor Mike Coffman, as well as the chiefs of police of Denver and Aurora, according to local media<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Shelby stated that he did not care if Weiser\u2019s wife, dog, or child(ren) had to die in the process. He planned how to obtain a getaway vehicle, and said he wanted to track when Weiser travels from his house to work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe Respondent has said he will \u2018pull the trigger\u2019 himself and does not mind getting \u2018blood on his hands,’\u201d the FBI wrote of Shelby, according to the Associated Press<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But after learning of the FBI\u2019s investigation, Weiser decided not to press charges against Shelby. Instead, the Denver police asked a judge for a \u201cred flag\u201d order that allowed them to seize Shelby\u2019s weapons, which they are confirmed to have done.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThis past summer, various law enforcement agencies identified a serious threat to the Attorney General and other public officials.\u00a0After they conducted an investigation, the Attorney General decided not to press for charges,” Lawrence Pacheco, director of communications for the Attorney General\u2019s Office, said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Those law enforcement agencies sought and received an extreme risk protection order against the individual who posed the threat,” he continued.\u00a0“Given the risk, the Attorney General believes that was the appropriate response.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Weiser refused to explain his decision, according to the AP. It\u2019s unclear why allowing Shelby to remain free and without proper psychological attention constitutes an \u201cappropriate response,\u201d given the nature of his threats and the steps he took towards acting them out. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Presumably, Shelby will still have access to any number of deadly weapons he might use to kill Weiser, his family, and other elected officials.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It\u2019s also unclear why Denver police didn\u2019t resort to Colorado\u2019s civil commitment laws<\/a>, which allow law enforcement to detain someone who appears to be mentally ill and presents an immediate danger to themselves or others and provides them with psychiatric care.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
