{"id":139147,"date":"2020-12-31T13:50:35","date_gmt":"2020-12-31T18:50:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.gunsamerica.com\/digest\/?p=139147"},"modified":"2020-12-31T13:50:35","modified_gmt":"2023-09-07T05:15:11","slug":"virginia-ends-online-classes-for-concealed-carry-permits","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/gunsamerica.com\/digest\/virginia-ends-online-classes-for-concealed-carry-permits\/","title":{"rendered":"Virginia Ends Online Classes for Concealed Carry Permits"},"content":{"rendered":"\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Starting tomorrow, Virginians will no longer be allowed to take an online class to satisfy the handgun competency requirement for the state\u2019s concealed carry application. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gunsamerica.com\/digest\/new-gun-control-laws-take-effect-in-virginia\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"virginia-ends-online-classes-for-concealed-carry-permits\" title=\"Virginia Ends Online Classes for Concealed Carry Permits\">Politicians<\/a> who backed the new law, which takes effect Jan. 1, 2021, claim that online courses are no substitute for in-person training. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Prospective applicants almost got a break as the Senate this year, citing the COVID-19 pandemic, passed a bill that would have delayed the rollout until July of 2021. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, the House of Delegates shot that bill down, thus keeping things on track for the start of the New Year.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Given the impending deadline, many Virginians in recent weeks signed up for online concealed carry classes. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ryan Heathcock, of Chesterfield, finished an 8-hour virtual class on Wednesday morning.&nbsp; Though he has yet to purchase a handgun, he wanted to get his ducks in a row before the law changes. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m just glad that I was able to sneak in with the law as it\u2019s currently written and not have to deal with what happens after January the 1st,\u201d Heathcock told <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wric.com\/news\/local-news\/new-law-going-into-effect-bans-online-safety-courses-as-part-of-concealed-carry-permit-applications\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"virginia-ends-online-classes-for-concealed-carry-permits\" title=\"Virginia Ends Online Classes for Concealed Carry Permits\">WRIC<\/a>. \u201cIt\u2019s not an accident that the courthouse is full today.
