Phil Murphy is pushing ahead with his plan to radically raise taxes on gun owners in the Garden State.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Originally proposed six months ago before the escalation of the novel coronavirus, Gov. Murphy looked to make the following changes to the state\u2019s tax code, per <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nj.com\/politics\/2020\/08\/murphy-nj-budget-to-include-tax-hikes-on-millionaires-smokers-gun-owners-and-4-billion-in-borrowing-sources.html\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"nj-governor-looking-to-tax-2a-out-of-existence\" title=\"NJ Governor Looking to Tax 2A Out of Existence\">NJ.com<\/a>:\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><em>The so-called millionaires&#8217; tax \u2014 which would increase from 8.97% to 10.75% on gross income between $1 and $5 million. Murphy\u2019s fellow Democrats who control the state Legislature have blocked that plan twice since the governor took office.<\/em><\/li><li><em>An increase of $1.65 in taxes on each pack of cigarettes sold in the state.<\/em><\/li><li><em>An increase of $48 on the fee people must pay to buy a handgun permit in the state and an increase of $95 on the fee for every firearms identification card, among other gun fee hikes.<\/em><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Because of COVID-19, lawmakers never agreed to the proposal and kicked the can down the road.\u00a0 Now, facing a $5 billion budget shortfall, Murphy is hoping that the Democratically-controlled Legislature will jump on board with these increases as well as others, along with borrowing some $4 billion to make ends meet. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">SEE ALSO: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gunsamerica.com\/army-testing-the-smuzzle-a-new-hard-use-hybrid-muzzle-device\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"nj-governor-looking-to-tax-2a-out-of-existence\" title=\"NJ Governor Looking to Tax 2A Out of Existence\">Army Testing \u2018the Smuzzle,\u2019 a New Hard-Use Hybrid Muzzle Device<\/a><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cBesides setting off an unprecedented public health crisis, the COVID-19 pandemic also unleashed an economic crisis that can only be rivaled by two other times in our state\u2019s entire 244-year history \u2013 the Great Depression and the Civil War,\u201d said Murphy in a statement obtained by GunsAmerica.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis budget proposal is not simply about getting New Jersey back to where it used to be, but moving forward to where we need to be by building a new economy that grows our middle class and works for every single family, while asking the wealthiest among us to pay their fair share in taxes,\u201d he continued.&nbsp; &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Under the current arrangement, New Jerseyans pay $5 for a firearms identification card and $2 for a pistol permit.\u00a0 In a post on Facebook, the Coalition of New Jersey Firearm Owners (CNJFO) compared the ginormous hike in fees to that of a Reconstruction-era poll tax. \u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1000\" height=\"906\" title=\"NJ Governor Looking to Tax 2A Out of Existence\" src=\"https:\/\/www.gunsamerica.com\/digest\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/Screen-Shot-2020-08-26-at-5.38.34-PM.png\" alt=\"NJ Governor Looking to Tax 2A Out of Existence\" class=\"wp-image-133105\" srcset=\"https:\/\/gunsamerica.com\/digest\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/Screen-Shot-2020-08-26-at-5.38.34-PM.png 1000w, https:\/\/gunsamerica.com\/digest\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/Screen-Shot-2020-08-26-at-5.38.34-PM-331x300.png 331w, https:\/\/gunsamerica.com\/digest\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/Screen-Shot-2020-08-26-at-5.38.34-PM-150x136.png 150w, https:\/\/gunsamerica.com\/digest\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/Screen-Shot-2020-08-26-at-5.38.34-PM-768x696.png 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" \/><figcaption>(<em>Photo: Facebook<\/em>)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Based on CNJFO\u2019s math, a citizen\u2019s going to have to come out of pocket almost $250 before he or she can even take possession of a handgun!\u00a0 In 2018, Murphy tried to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gunsamerica.com\/new-jersey-governor-400-carry-permits\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"nj-governor-looking-to-tax-2a-out-of-existence\" title=\"NJ Governor Looking to Tax 2A Out of Existence\">enact a similar tax scheme<\/a> but to no avail. \u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At that time, GunsAmerica reached out to the Second Amendment Foundation (SAF) for comment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhat gun prohibitionists like New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy can\u2019t outright ban they want to tax out of existence,\u201d said Alan Gottlieb, the founder of SAF, in an email to GunsAmerica.&nbsp; \u201cThe power to tax can be the power to destroy.
