The bill has already passed the state Senate and is expected to pass the Assembly and be signed by California Gov. Gavin Newsom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s time to wake up and realize that we\u2019re in the middle of a mass extinction event,&#8221; said Sen. Henry Stern (D-Canoga Park), who wrote the bill, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.msn.com\/en-us\/news\/us\/this-l-a-hunter-killed-an-elephant-now-he-s-a-peta-target-in-bid-to-end-trophy-hunting\/ar-BB17v8ac?li=BBnbcA1\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"hunt365-peta-lion-hunter-ban-trophy-imports-california\" title=\"PETA Goes After Lion Hunter in Bid to Ban Trophy Imports to California\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"undefined (opens in a new tab)\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">LA Times<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To stoke public sentiment and ensure the bill\u2019s passage, PETA has released <a aria-label=\"undefined (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=DRxUzeL6sUk&amp;feature=youtu.be\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"hunt365-peta-lion-hunter-ban-trophy-imports-california\" title=\"PETA Goes After Lion Hunter in Bid to Ban Trophy Imports to California\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">a video<\/a> of Los Angeles native Aaron Raby shooting and killing an elephant in South Africa. I didn&#8217;t break a law. They&#8217;re going to place a ban because a bunch of &#8230; crybabies that don\u2019t like hunting.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;We\u2019re not all bloodthirsty, psycho machines that people make us out to be,&#8221; he said. &#8220;I promise you, I can read an animal better than someone who is against hunting. The animals who live there, including threatened animals like lions and elephants, would damage crops and be exterminated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;We pay a lot of money to hunt these animals,&#8221; Raby said. &#8220;If we didn&#8217;t hunt, that land would be converted into cattle ranches and there&#8217;d be poaching. They don&#8217;t want lions killing their cattle or elephants destroying their crops.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A number of scientific studies have backed Raby\u2019s argument. Nearly 130 scientists signed a letter published last year in <a aria-label=\"undefined (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/science.sciencemag.org\/content\/365\/6456\/874\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"hunt365-peta-lion-hunter-ban-trophy-imports-california\" title=\"PETA Goes After Lion Hunter in Bid to Ban Trophy Imports to California\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>Science<\/em><\/a> titled \u201cTrophy hunting bans imperil biodiversity.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In another study <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gunsamerica.com\/hunt365-trophy-hunting-ban-exacerbate-biodiversity-loss-south-africa\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"hunt365-peta-lion-hunter-ban-trophy-imports-california\" title=\"PETA Goes After Lion Hunter in Bid to Ban Trophy Imports to California\">published in June<\/a>, researchers from Rhodes University in South Africa conducted interviews with landowners currently operating trophy hunting businesses. A majority (91%) of landowners reported that the economic viability of their private land and the biodiversity on it would be lost following a hunting ban.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>PETA has asked South African
