{"id":130934,"date":"2020-07-02T14:04:08","date_gmt":"2020-07-02T18:04:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.gunsamerica.com\/digest\/?p=130934"},"modified":"2020-07-02T14:04:08","modified_gmt":"2023-09-06T21:37:58","slug":"sheriff-vows-to-deputize-gun-owners-to-protect-citizens-from-rioters","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/gunsamerica.com\/digest\/sheriff-vows-to-deputize-gun-owners-to-protect-citizens-from-rioters\/","title":{"rendered":"Sheriff Vows to Deputize Gun Owners to Protect Citizens from Rioters"},"content":{"rendered":"\n\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A sheriff in Florida vowed this week to deputize gun owners to protect county residents from rioters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIf we can\u2019t handle you, I\u2019ll exercise the power and\nauthority as the sheriff and I\u2019ll make special deputies of every lawful gun\nowner in the county and I\u2019ll deputize them to this one purpose: to stand in the\ngap between lawlessness and civility,\u201d said&nbsp;Clay County Sheriff Darryl Daniels\nas he stood in front of 18 deputies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Daniels clarified in the three-minute video posted on\nFacebook that he and his deputies swore to uphold the Constitution, and his\nwords shouldn\u2019t be taken as a threat to those who want to peacefully protest. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ll protect your constitutional rights as long as you\nremain under the umbrella of peaceful protest. But the second you step out from\nup under the protection of the Constitution, we\u2019ll be waiting on you and give\nyou everything you want: all the publicity, all the pain, all the glamour and\nglory for all that five minutes will give you,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">SEE ALSO: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gunsamerica.com\/americans-of-all-races-take-up-arms-to-defend-against-violent-rioters-looters\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"sheriff-vows-to-deputize-gun-owners-to-protect-citizens-from-rioters\" title=\"Sheriff Vows to Deputize Gun Owners to Protect Citizens from Rioters\">Americans of All Races Take Up Arms to Defend Against Violent Rioters, Looters<\/a> <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Daniels is African American, as are several of his deputies.\nHis department has a \u201cgreat relationship\u201d with its residents, he said, but \u201cif\nyou come to Clay County and think for one second we\u2019ll bend our backs for you,\nyou\u2019re sadly mistaken.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Daniels did not indicate that his county had seen any rioting or that he expected to see any. But he appears worried that outside agitators will come into his community and encourage lawlessness. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cLawlessness? After allowing \u201cprotesters\u201d to occupy a portion of Seattle for weeks, city police have been tasked with clearing the area after several people were murdered in the so-called Capitol Hill Autonomous Zone. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Daniels wouldn\u2019t be the first sheriff to threaten to deputize citizens in the name of the Constitution. Sheriff Scott Jenkins in Culpepper County, Va., <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"vowed last year (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.gunsamerica.com\/other-states-second-amendment-sanctuary\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"sheriff-vows-to-deputize-gun-owners-to-protect-citizens-from-rioters\" title=\"Sheriff Vows to Deputize Gun Owners to Protect Citizens from Rioters\" target=\"_blank\">vowed last year<\/a> to \u201cproperly screen and deputize thousands of law-abiding citizens to protect their constitutional right to own firearms.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Jenkins has not needed to follow through on his threat, and it\u2019s\nunclear whether Clay will, either.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Daniels is a Republican finishing his first term, and is being challenged by six opponents in an upcoming
