House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and former Vice President Joe Biden renewed the call for tougher gun laws last Friday on the 4th anniversary of the Pulse Nightclub attack<\/a> in Orlando, Florida. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Specifically, Pelosi and Biden want the Senate to vote on two bills the House passed in 2019, H.R. 8, the Bipartisan Background Checks Act<\/a>, and H.R. 1112, the Enhanced Background Checks Act<\/a>.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe men and women murdered at Pulse were there to enjoy an evening of music, dancing and celebration in a place of safety and solidarity; they had the right to live free from the fear of gun violence and hate,\u201d said Pelosi in a statement<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cLeader McConnell must listen to the will of the American people, end his partisan obstruction and finally bring H.R. 8 and H.R. 1112 up for a vote,\u201d she continued.  \u201cAs we take time to remember those we\u2019ve lost, we must never back away from our mission to safeguard our communities and end the horrors of gun violence once and for all.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

H.R. 8 is a \u201cuniversal background check\u201d bill that would effectively criminalize private transfers and H.R. 1112 would extend the review period for background checks from three to 10 business days<\/a>.  Both would positively chill the 2A rights of law-abiding gun owners while doing very little, if anything at all, to prevent criminals from getting guns<\/a>.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Interestingly, as Dr. John Lott explained in a 2019 op-ed published by FoxNews<\/a>, the proposed legislation would be bad for all responsible Americans, but especially bad for people of color as it would make it more difficult for them to obtain a firearm for self-defense.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Of the more than 3 million annual background check denials, the vast majority are mistakes or false positives.  In other words, millions of good people attempting to purchase a firearm are denied not because they are a prohibited person but because they share a name and\/or a birthdate with someone who is a felon, domestic abuser, mental defective, minor, etc.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Because many minorities live in urban centers with higher rates of crime, they are at greater risk of becoming a victim when they are mistakenly denied by the current system.  No gun means no way to defend oneself from armed criminals. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

As Lott notes, NICS could be fixed by the use of basic identifying information but instead of trying to actually improve the system, \u201cDemocrats reveal that they want to make it more difficult, unfair, and inconvenient for law-abiding people \u2013 particularly minorities \u2013 to buy a gun.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Yet, perversely, Biden claims that H.R. 8 & H.R. 1112 would actually make those most vulnerable in our society safer.\u00a0 \u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cSadly, all these years later, terrorism, mass shootings, and hate crimes continue to rip apart our American communities,\u201d said Biden in a separate statement. \u201cOur places of worship have been attacked, Hispanics have been targeted in places like El Paso, the death toll from mass shootings continues to mount, and LGBTQ+ people, particularly transgender women of color, are disproportionately targeted by violence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe inaction of Republican lawmakers to address the scourge of gun violence in America is unacceptable, and Jill and I stand with the survivors of mass shootings and all the family members of victims to support the #HonorThemWithAction campaign,\u201d Biden continued.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pelosi and Biden, and the Democratic Party in general, rightly acknowledge that minority communities are \u201cdisproportionately targeted by violence,\u201d however instead of empowering these people to defend themselves via their Constitutional rights, they’re pushing policies that will ensure more minorities are unarmed and defenseless in their time of need.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It’s a pernicious game they’re playing, one that ultimately creates more victims who are not only victims of violent crime but also to the belief that gun control enacted by an ever-expanding Nanny State is the only way to stop hardened criminals. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
