A lot of people who were on the fence about the 2A are starting to come around<\/a>.\u00a0 The latest example I\u2019ve seen comes from Pam Allen, a resident of South Jordan, UT, who in a letter published in The Salt Lake Tribune <\/em><\/a>acknowledges that the founders and framers’ fears over government tyranny are as relevant today as they were when the Constitution was ratified in 1788. \u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Allen wrote, \u201cI could see guns used for hunting and for self-defense, with the caveat that military weapons were unnecessary. I could see guns used for target shooting, with the caveat that military weapons should only be owned by and used at commercial shooting ranges.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cBut I never could see guns used for a well-regulated militia, and I never could see guns used for protection against tyranny. I always found those far-fetched ideas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWell, maybe I was wrong,\u201d she admits.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Allen goes on to posit that we are now living under a tyrannical administration, pointing out how president Trump has mobilized the military to restore law and order, though she of course phrases it differently, accusing him of using soldiers \u201cagainst the media and peaceful protesters asserting their First Amendment rights.\u201d  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

She then closes by asking what gun owners plan to do now.  \u201cDo they form their own militia to dominate protesters throughout the country, whether peaceful or not? Or do they use their weapons to fight against this tyrannical Trump government?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Basically, Allen wants to know if we\u2019re gonna join a despotic president Trump or side with the peaceful citizens marching in the streets against police brutality.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

In my opinion, that\u2019s a false choice and misguided assessment of the situation.\u00a0 First, Trump\u2019s marshaling of resources, including military personnel, isn\u2019t tyrannical.\u00a0 It\u2019s an attempt to combat the violent rioters, looters, and vandals that have hijacked the peaceful protests taking place around the country. \u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I implore anyone who hasn\u2019t already to watch the riot videos on social media<\/a>, recorded in almost every major city, to see just how ugly the situation has gotten.  Things seem to be better now than they were a weekend ago, thanks in part to Trump’s efforts to crack down on rioters, but over that initial Friday, Saturday and Sunday after the George Floyd video went viral everything appeared to be going off the rails.  New York City looked like Gotham City from \u201cThe Dark Knight,\u201d<\/a> the Batman movie.  It was insanity, a complete breakdown of social order!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Second, gun owners don\u2019t have to choose between president Trump and peaceful protesters.  Both are deserving of our support provided they act within the purview of the law, particularly our Constitution.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Trump as the head of state and government must “take care that the laws be faithfully executed”, and “preserve, protect and defend the Constitution,\u201d as the Constitution states.\u00a0 As such, using federal resources and manpower to stop professional agitators and violent lawbreakers who threaten the very stability of our Republic is an appropriate use of power.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And citizens have the right to peaceably<\/em> assemble under the First Amendment.  No problems there.  While gun owners may not agree with the cause of a march, gun owners certainly respect one\u2019s right to protest.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Everything\u2019s kosher when everyone plays by the rules.  But the problem is that there are, as mentioned, bad apples out there looking to exploit this moment in history for personal gain and\/or to forward some sort of anarchist agenda (in the case of Antifa and other radical organizations). <\/p>\n\n\n\n

These are the people that need to be stopped. If we can all — armed Americans and unarmed Americans — agree on that, and we collectively work together toward putting these criminals behind bars then things should return to normal soon enough, and the conversation can resume about what changes, if any, need to be made to address police brutality. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
