A husband and wife in Pennsylvania were harassed by police earlier this month after someone at their son\u2019s school spotted a toy gun during a school-related Zoom call.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sheila Perez Smith recounted the incident on the Todd Starnes Radio Show<\/a>. She said that her 7-year-old son had just completed a Zoom class when she received an email from the son\u2019s teacher. Apparently, another parent had spied the toy in the background and had called the police. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAnother parent had been very\nuncomfortable by the fact that the gun had been in view of the zoom call,\u201d Smith\ntold Starnes. \u201cIt\u2019s such an innocent thing that someone used to make a judgment\nand an accusation.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A few hours later, police knocked\non her door and asked Smith and her husband to step outside. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

When Smith\u2019s husband explained that\nthey didn\u2019t own a real firearm but that their son had been given a toy, the\npolice weren\u2019t satisfied. According to Smith, they lectured the couple and told\nthem that young kids shouldn\u2019t even own toy firearms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI said, this is a toy. No one is unsafe in our home. Everyone is\nsafe and well and healthy,\u201d Smith said. \u201cThey took it very seriously as if\nthere was some sort of chance we had weapons in the home.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cHe essentially lectured us on child safety and the fact that our\nchildren are too young to interact with any guns and weapons,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Smith told Starnes that even though they weren\u2019t cited, the\nincident left their children terrified.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThey were scared their parents were going to go to jail that day\nfor something that was completely untrue,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhat really troubled me was the fact that someone made a claim,\nan accusation with zero facts,\u201d she continued. \u201cIt was completely bogus, and it\nleft our kids really scared.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This isn\u2019t the first time busybody do-gooders have gone after toy \u201cfirearms.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In 2018, Hempstead, Long Island, held a toy gun buyback<\/a> for local school children in which they could exchange their toy guns for different kinds of toys.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cSaying no to guns is important \u2013 even toy guns,\u201d said Hempstead Village Mayor Don Ryan as reported by WABC.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe purpose is to offer safe alternatives to toy guns. We don\u2019t want the kids playing with guns. Guns are dangerous,\u201d added Hempstead Village Trustee LaMont Johnson.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As GunsAmerica news editor S.H. Blannelberry pointed out at the time, events like this instill an \u201cirrational fear of firearms.\u201d The same could probably be said of the police visit to the Smith home. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cHow about instead of indoctrinating kids to have an irrational fear of firearms, including toys that resemble firearms, we teach them actual gun safety?\u201d Blannelberry recommended. \u201cAnd when each child is ready, we teach him or her the tenets of responsible gun ownership?\u00a0 Education, not fear, is the answer.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

GunsAmerica reached out to Smith for a description of the offending toy firearm but has not received a response. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
