(Photo: Andrea Pokrzywinski from Cheqamegon National Forest)<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A man armed with a rifle foiled what authorities say was an attempted mass murder in Alaska earlier this month. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On May 16, 19-year-old Bryan Nicolai broke into the Public Safety Building in Kwethluk, a remote city of just over 700 residents located about 400 miles west of Anchorage. Nicolai activated the building\u2019s fire alarm system before breaking into one of the building\u2019s offices. There, he found a ballistic vest, a helmet, and multiple rifles, which he staged throughout the building, according to an Alaska State Trooper <a href=\"https:\/\/dailydispatch.dps.alaska.gov\/Home\/DisplayIncident?incidentNumber=AK20033045\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"armed-alaska-man-foils-mass-murderer\" title=\"Armed Alaska Man Foils Suspected Mass Murderer\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">incident report<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Community residents began responding to the fire alarm, including Village Public Safety Officers (VPSO), who do not carry firearms on patrol. Officer Tiger Lee was the first to respond to the incident, and he told <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.alaskapublic.org\/2020\/05\/22\/after-armed-resident-thwarts-shooting-kwethluk-vpos-consider-carrying-guns\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"armed-alaska-man-foils-mass-murderer\" title=\"Armed Alaska Man Foils Suspected Mass Murderer\" target=\"_blank\">Alaska Public Radio<\/a> (APR) that Nicolai pointed a rifle at him and pulled the trigger.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI believe he wasn\u2019t aware that the rifle was empty, and I\ncould have been shot,\u201d Lee said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Nicolai grabbed another rifle and began firing Lee\u2019s\ndirection while the officer hid behind a shipping container. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That\u2019s when Casey Thompson stepped in and ended the incident without firing a shot.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cA community member that initially arrived and observed what was happening, fled the area, returned with a rifle and was able to talk Nicolai into lowering his weapon and lay on the ground,\u201d according to the police report. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">SEE ALSO: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gunsamerica.com\/ohio-gun-shop-owner-foils-mass-shooting\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"armed-alaska-man-foils-mass-murderer\" title=\"Armed Alaska Man Foils Suspected Mass Murderer\">Ohio Gun Shop Owner Foils Mass Shooting<\/a> <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Lee expressed gratitude that Thompson had a gun, APR\nreported, and he thinks he and his fellow officers should be able to carry\nthem.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIf we had access to firearms, we\u2019d be able to handle more\nof these scenarios on our own,\u201d Lee said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Kwethluk Public Safety Administrative Chief Nicolai Joseph\ntold APR that none of the ten officers in his village carry firearms. Some\ncarry batons and pepper spray, but others only have handcuffs. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Deputy Chief David Berezkin said that officers do not carry\nfirearms because the required training is too expensive. The training takes two\nto three months in the lower 48, and Joseph said that the city can\u2019t afford to\nbe sued for improper use of force.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Berezkin also pointed out that incidents involving guns are rare\nin the village, and that sometimes the presence of a gun can escalate rather\nthan deescalate the situation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe don\u2019t deal with this every day, you know?\u201d Berezkin said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">SEE ALSO: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gunsamerica.com\/renowned-criminologist-when-media-cant-demonize-guns-it-ignores-mass-killings\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"armed-alaska-man-foils-mass-murderer\" title=\"Armed Alaska Man Foils Suspected Mass Murderer\">Renowned Criminologist: When Media Can\u2019t Demonize Guns, It Ignores Mass Killings<\/a> <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Lee also believes he could have talked Nicolai down if Thompson\nhadn\u2019t stepped in. He told APR that his previous experience dealing with people\nwho want to harm themselves has taught him to ask questions and convince them\nthat he\u2019s there to help. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhat are they feeling? Why are they feeling that?\u201d Lee\nsaid. \u201cAnd if there\u2019s anything I can do to help. That I can do, or my fellow\nofficers, or my fellow community members can do to help them feel better.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Thompson declined to talk with local media about the incident and has not
