(Photo: Ken Lund, Flickr)<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Utah Division of Wildlife Resources (DWR) is proposing a 9,175 cut to the number of general season buck permits issued in 2020 in 19 hunting units throughout the state. The proposal would also decrease the number of doe permits by 1,025. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Officials cite as justification for the decision a declining\ndeer population brought on by drought, harsh winters, and fires over the last\nseveral years. Though the population hit a 10-year peak in 2016, biologists\nbelieve cutting the number of buck permits is necessary to bring the\ndoe-to-buck ratio back in line. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;As we saw our populations grow there in 2015 and 2016,\nwe jumped above what the management objective was,&#8221; Covy Jones, DWR\u2019s big\ngame coordinator, said&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=LNc_Nl95RBk&amp;feature=youtu.be\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"hunt365-utah-cutting-buck-permits\" title=\"Utah Recommends Cutting Buck Permits by 9,000 for 2020\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">in a video presentation<\/a>. &#8220;And as we\u2019ve seen those\npopulations fall off, especially the last year, we\u2019re back down into that range\nwe\u2019re managing for.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Jones explained that the DWR tries to manage for 15 to 20 bucks for every 100 does, and the ratio dropped back into that range in 2019. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">SEE ALSO: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gunsamerica.com\/hunt365-nssf-covid-19-related-changes-states-hunting-season\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"hunt365-utah-cutting-buck-permits\" title=\"Utah Recommends Cutting Buck Permits by 9,000 for 2020\">NSSF: The COVID-19-Related Changes States Are Making to Hunting Season<\/a> <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Jones also noted that the agency is concerned about the\nnumber of fawns being born each year. He said a healthy ratio is 60 fawns for\nevery 100 does, but in the last several years the number has dropped below that\nbenchmark.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cGeneral season units are highly dependent on fawn\nproduction,\u201d Jones said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Nineteen units will see a decrease in the number of buck permits available next year, while 10 units will see no change. The proposal drops the total number of permits available from 89,000 in 2019 to 80,725 in 2020.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The state recorded a little more than 321,000 deer last year, a 51,000 drop from the previous year.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">SEE ALSO: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gunsamerica.com\/hunt365-former-safari-club-lawyer\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"hunt365-utah-cutting-buck-permits\" title=\"Utah Recommends Cutting Buck Permits by 9,000 for 2020\">Trump Admin Taps Former Safari Club Lawyer for Fish and Wildlife Post<\/a> <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>John Bair, vice president of the Utah-based conservation group Sportsmen for Fish and Wildlife, told <a href=\"https:\/\/www.deseret.com\/utah\/2020\/4\/5\/21201378\/hunting-division-wildlife-cut-10000-deer-buck-permits-2020-season-sportsman-fish\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"hunt365-utah-cutting-buck-permits\" title=\"Utah Recommends Cutting Buck Permits by 9,000 for 2020\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">Deseret News<\/a> that his organization supports the proposal. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cOverall nobody really likes to see (hunting) opportunities\nhave to be cut,\u201d he said. \u201cBut the deer hunters in the state understand it and\nI think they will be largely in support knowing that if we do everything we\ncan, hopefully in a couple years down the road we can put those tags back and\nget people back out on the mountain.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI think they\u2019re doing a pretty good job of weighing\neverything out,\u201d he continued. \u201cIt\u2019s not an easy job. It\u2019s a thankless job.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The DWR opened an&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/wildlife.utah.gov\/online-rac.html\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"hunt365-utah-cutting-buck-permits\" title=\"Utah Recommends Cutting Buck Permits by 9,000 for 2020\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">online comment period<\/a>&nbsp;on March 27 and is seeking public input before each of the state\u2019s five regions votes. Members of the Utah Wildlife Board will consider their views before casting a deciding vote at the end of April, according to Deseret news. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Jones urged hunters to make their opinion heard and get\ninvolved in the process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe more you get involved the more say you have in what happens,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"has-text-align-center
