(Photo: Gage Skidmore)<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Frustrated with the Trump administration\u2019s decision to <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"categorize gun stores as \u201cessential,\u201d (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.gunsamerica.com\/everytown-on-gun-industry-being-essential\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"everytown-dems-extend-wait-times\" title=\"Everytown, Dems Want to Extend Wait Times for Gun Purchases\" target=\"_blank\">categorize gun stores as \u201cessential,\u201d<\/a> gun control groups and Democratic U.S. Senators are hoping to keep firearms out of American hands by indefinitely extending wait times for gun purchases. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Everytown for Gun Safety issued a \u201cguidance\u201d letter to state\ngovernors asking them to prohibit the automatic transfer of firearms if the\nFederal Bureau of Investigation cannot complete a background check within three\nbusiness days. Everytown argues that the FBI will not be able to handle the\ninflux of new gun owners purchasing firearms in the wake of the COVID-19\ncrisis. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAs America\u2019s governors move heaven and earth to free up\nhospital beds for COVID-19 victims, they shouldn\u2019t have to worry about how many\nof those beds will be taken by gunshot victims,\u201d said&nbsp;John Feinblatt,\npresident of Everytown for Gun Safety.&nbsp;\u201cSo as gun sales surge, we\u2019re\nurging governors to extend the background check window and give law enforcement\nthe time they need to complete each and every background check.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Everytown also praises Democratic Rhode Island Gov. Gina Raimondo, who <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"issued an executive order (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/turnto10.com\/news\/local\/raimondo-issues-executive-order-extending-firearm-background-check-from-7-days-to-30\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"everytown-dems-extend-wait-times\" title=\"Everytown, Dems Want to Extend Wait Times for Gun Purchases\" target=\"_blank\">issued an executive order<\/a> on March 20<sup>th<\/sup> extending the wait time to 30 days for state and federal law enforcement to complete a background check. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">SEE ALSO: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gunsamerica.com\/clays-covid-19-gun-buying-guide-for-noobs-part-ii-holsters-slings\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"everytown-dems-extend-wait-times\" title=\"Everytown, Dems Want to Extend Wait Times for Gun Purchases\">Clay\u2019s COVID-19 Gun Buying Guide for Noobs Part II: Holsters &amp; Slings<\/a> <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>A group of Democratic U.S. Senators also sent a letter to the leaders of the FBI and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms, urging them to tell gun stores to wait until a background check has been completed before transferring a firearm. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cGuidance should urge FFLs to wait for NICS to complete\nthose background checks before transferring firearms, and remind FFLs of their\nobligations under 18 U.S.C. \u00a7\u00a7 922(b), (d), and (x) not to transfer firearms to\nany person whom they know, or have reasonable cause to believe, is prohibited\nfrom possessing a firearm,\u201d the letter states. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The letter was signed by senators Kamala Harris, Amy\nKlobuchar, Richard Blumenthal, and Mazie Hirono, among others. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">SEE ALSO: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gunsamerica.com\/gun-buyers-shatter-nics\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"everytown-dems-extend-wait-times\" title=\"Everytown, Dems Want to Extend Wait Times for Gun Purchases\">Gun Buyers Shatter NICS Background Check Record Amid COVID-19 Panic<\/a> <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Congress included the three-day transfer window in the 1993 Brady Bill to prohibit the FBI from indefinitely delaying a background check and thus revoking-by-bureaucracy someone\u2019s Second Amendment rights. And, as GunsAmerica discovered <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gunsamerica.com\/exclusive-atf-kills-program-fast-tracked-nfa-items\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"everytown-dems-extend-wait-times\" title=\"Everytown, Dems Want to Extend Wait Times for Gun Purchases\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">in our investigation of NFA item delays<\/a>, the FBI is more than happy to sit on a background check if they don\u2019t have a time frame within which it must be completed. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Along with promoting longer wait times for firearms\npurchases in the middle of a global pandemic, Everytown includes in their \u201cguidance\u201d\na list of additional measures they believe governors should take:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Educate the public and first-time gun buyers about the risks that come with gun ownership; <\/li><li>Promote the secure storage of firearms;<\/li><li>Address the increased risk of suicide by ensuring extreme risk protection orders are designated as \u201cessential\u201d court services;<\/li><li>Protect families by ensuring domestic violence restraining orders can be sought and issued, and providing continuity of services to victims;<\/li><li>Ensure essential community gun violence intervention programs can continue to work and give them the critical support they need; and <\/li><li>Prevent criminals from obtaining the parts to build Ghost Guns<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"has-text-align-center wp-block-heading\"><strong>***<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gunsamerica.com\/\" campaign=\"SHOT2020_BuySellGA\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\">Buy and Sell on GunsAmerica!
