(Photo: Ralph Northam Facebook)<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Virginia\u2019s legislative session came to a close on Saturday, but not before gun-control advocates approved at least three anti-gun bills just hours before the deadline.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Virginia Senate gave their final approval to bills banning\nthe private transfer of firearms without a background check, limiting handgun\npurchases to one every 30 days, and making daycares\/preschools and licensed day\nhome facilities gun-free zones. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>All legislation now goes to Gov. Ralph Northam, who is expected to sign any gun control proposal that crosses his desk. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cEvery year, we lose more than one thousand Virginians to gun violence,\u201d Northam said in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.governor.virginia.gov\/newsroom\/all-releases\/2020\/march\/headline-853214-en.html\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"virginia-passes-last-second\" title=\"Virginia Passes Last-Second Background Check, One-Handgun-a-Month Legislation\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">statement<\/a>. \u201cToday, this year, Virginia has said enough is enough. The emergency of gun violence must end. This legislation will help get us there.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAnd thank you to the legislators who finally listened to the voices of Virginians and voted to pass commonsense gun safety legislation,\u201d he continued. \u201cThese bills will save lives.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">SEE ALSO: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gunsamerica.com\/democratic-virginia-senator-retaliating-against-sheriffs\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"virginia-passes-last-second\" title=\"Virginia Passes Last-Second Background Check, One-Handgun-a-Month Legislation\">\u2018I said it\u2019: Democratic Virginia Senator Admits to Retaliating Against Sheriffs Who Supported Sanctuary Movement<\/a><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The universal background check bill (<a href=\"https:\/\/lis.virginia.gov\/cgi-bin\/legp604.exe?ses=201&amp;typ=bil&amp;val=sb70&amp;submit=GO\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"virginia-passes-last-second\" title=\"Virginia Passes Last-Second Background Check, One-Handgun-a-Month Legislation\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Senate Bill 70<\/a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/lis.virginia.gov\/cgi-bin\/legp604.exe?ses=201&amp;typ=bil&amp;val=hb2&amp;submit=GO\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"virginia-passes-last-second\" title=\"Virginia Passes Last-Second Background Check, One-Handgun-a-Month Legislation\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">House Bill 2<\/a>) exempts gifts made to immediate family\nmembers, but any seller who fails to conduct a background check will be guilty\nof a Class 6 felony and any seller who purchases a firearm without obtaining a background\ncheck will be guilty of a Class 1 misdemeanor. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The one-handgun-a-month bill (<a href=\"https:\/\/lis.virginia.gov\/cgi-bin\/legp604.exe?ses=201&amp;typ=bil&amp;val=sb69&amp;submit=GO\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"virginia-passes-last-second\" title=\"Virginia Passes Last-Second Background Check, One-Handgun-a-Month Legislation\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Senate Bill 69<\/a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/lis.virginia.gov\/cgi-bin\/legp604.exe?ses=201&amp;typ=bil&amp;val=hb812&amp;submit=GO\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"virginia-passes-last-second\" title=\"Virginia Passes Last-Second Background Check, One-Handgun-a-Month Legislation\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">House Bill 812<\/a>) revives a policy passed in 1993 and\nchampioned by Virginia\u2019s Gov. L. Douglas Wilder until a Republican legislature repealed\nit in 2012.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Wilder sold the measure to the legislature as a way to combat gun trafficking from Virginia to New York, but an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nraila.org\/campaigns\/2019\/virginia\/waiting-periods\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"virginia-passes-last-second\" title=\"Virginia Passes Last-Second Background Check, One-Handgun-a-Month Legislation\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">analysis<\/a> of ATF data by the NRA-ILA revealed that the three years before and after the law\u2019s repeal saw no change in the number of firearms traced from Virginia to New York. It also stands to reason that bad actors willing to sell firearms to gun-running criminals won\u2019t hesitate to sell more than one handgun per month. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Virginia\u2019s gun-rights advocates spurred a pro-gun movement in communities across the state that culminated in a rally in Richmond at which 30,000 people attended to protest anti-gun policies. In addition, 146 towns, cities, and counties declared themselves Second Amendment sanctuaries and dozens of sheriffs vowed not to enforce new anti-gun measures. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">SEE ALSO: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gunsamerica.com\/youtube-virginia-gun-rights-rally\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"virginia-passes-last-second\" title=\"Virginia Passes Last-Second Background Check, One-Handgun-a-Month Legislation\">YouTube Quashed Live Streams of Virginia Gun Rights Rally<\/a><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Now that the legislative season is over, it\u2019s clear that the\nmovement succeeded in some areas while failing in others. Led by several\nmoderate Democrats no doubt fearful of losing their seats, the Virginia Senate\nblocked legislation banning the sale, manufacture, and transfer of so-called \u201cassault\nweapons\u201d and \u201chigh-capacity magazines.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The pro-gun Virginia Citizens Defense League <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gunsamerica.com\/virginia-senate-blocks-assault-weapons\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"virginia-passes-last-second\" title=\"Virginia Passes Last-Second Background Check, One-Handgun-a-Month Legislation\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">credited<\/a> the advocacy of gun owners for the surprising victory that saw four Democratic senators join six Republicans to block the legislation in committee. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But despite several close votes in the Senate, the anti-gun\nlobby succeeded in passing bills banning the private transfer of firearms\nwithout a background check, limiting handgun purchases to one per month,\nallowing local governments to enact draconian anti-gun measures, and allowing the\nconfiscation of firearms without due process with a so-called \u201cred flag\u201d law. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Virginians will have a chance to flip the legislature back to red at the next election in November 2021.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"has-text-align-center wp-block-heading\">***<a href=\"https:\/\/gunsamerica.com\/\" campaign=\"BuySellGA_Register\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\">Buy and Sell on GunsAmerica!<\/a>***<\/h2>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Virginia\u2019s legislative session came to a close on Saturday, but not before gun-control advocates approved at least three anti-gun bills just hours before the deadline.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":54,"featured_media":125528,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_specdata_upc":"","_specdata_placement":"","footnotes":""},"categories":[244,7,25,593,240],"tags":[132,469,607],"featured":[],"hunt365":[],"class_list":{"0":"post-125526","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-2nd-amendment-r2kba","8":"category-gunsamerica-authors","9":"category-current-events","10":"category-jordan-michaels","11":"category-this-week","12":"tag-buzz","13":"tag-gun-control","14":"tag-news"},"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO Premium plugin v27.3 (Yoast SEO v27.3) -
