To anyone who thought that Joe Biden might take a moderate stance on gun control if elected president, think again: the former VP vowed at a campaign stop in Dallas this week to put Robert \u201cBeto\u201d O\u2019Rourke in charge of his gun control agenda. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The former Congressman from Texas ran on one of the most\nextreme anti-gun platforms during his short time as a Democratic presidential\ncandidate, endorsing plans to confiscate \u201cassault rifles\u201d and enforce a nationwide\ngun registry, among many other proposals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Biden told O\u2019Rourke he\u2019d be placed in charge of the\nadministration\u2019s gun control agenda during an event at which O\u2019Rourke endorsed\nBiden for president. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI want to make something clear: I\u2019m going to guarantee you this is not the last you\u2019re seeing of this guy,\u201d Biden said to a crowd in Dallas. \u201cYou\u2019re going to take care of the gun problem with me. You\u2019re going to be the one who leads this effort. I\u2019m counting on you. We need you badly, the state needs you, the country needs you, you\u2019re the best.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

While Biden\u2019s gun control plan<\/a> differs from O\u2019Rourke\u2019s in that the former VP will not require a mandatory “assault weapon” buyback, many of the other proposals are identical. Biden has also ramped up his anti-gun rhetorical in recent weeks, telling<\/a> a CNN town hall in Nevada that he is \u201ccoming\u201d for gun makers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cA guy has 12 assault weapons with bump stocks, which means\nyou can fire it faster. You can pull the trigger faster,\u201d Biden continued,\nreferencing the Las Vegas hotel shooting. \u201cWhy in God\u2019s name should anyone,\nanyone, anyone, anyone be able to own that? It\u2019s just wrong, and we\u2019ve got to \u2014\nand I promise you, as president, I am going to get these guys.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Biden may also be taking his cues from anti-gun activist\nDavid Hogg, who said<\/a>\nin August that the president should appoint a \u201cNational Director of Gun\nViolence Prevention.\u201d In exchange for O\u2019Rourke\u2019s endorsement, Biden appears to\nbe slotting O\u2019Rourke into that role. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

O\u2019Rourke tried to save his dying campaign last year by\nfocusing primarily on the gun control issue following a mass murder in El Paso.\nThe move failed to increase his polling numbers, but he did reveal his\nextremist stance and his ignorance of basic tenets of firearms law.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As we reported<\/a>\nat the time, O\u2019Rourke misrepresented several conversations he had with gun\nowners at a gun show in Arkansas by taking their statements as endorsements of\nhis agenda. According to another gun owner who also spoke with O\u2019Rourke, the\ncandidate did not recognize a form 4473 and did not understand the laws\nsurrounding the gun purchasing process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ignorance of gun laws has never stopped anti-gun politicians from attempting to change them, of course, and there\u2019s no reason to believe Biden won\u2019t fulfill his promise to O\u2019Rourke if he\u2019s elected president in November. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
