{"id":124985,"date":"2020-02-25T12:58:46","date_gmt":"2020-02-25T17:58:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.gunsamerica.com\/digest\/?p=124985"},"modified":"2020-02-25T12:58:46","modified_gmt":"2023-09-06T14:40:49","slug":"john-lott-on-bloombergs-racial-remarks-stop-and-frisk-initiative","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/gunsamerica.com\/digest\/john-lott-on-bloombergs-racial-remarks-stop-and-frisk-initiative\/","title":{"rendered":"John Lott on Bloomberg\u2019s Racial Remarks, Stop-And-Frisk Initiative"},"content":{"rendered":"\n\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dr. John Lott appeared on<a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/opinion\/why-bloombergs-2015-stop-and-frisk-remarks-are-riddled-with-inaccuracies-john-lott\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"john-lott-on-bloombergs-racial-remarks-stop-and-frisk-initiative\" title=\"John Lott on Bloomberg\u2019s Racial Remarks, Stop-And-Frisk Initiative\"> Fox News earlier<\/a> this month to discuss Michael Bloomberg\u2019s controversial remarks about minorities and homicides.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At an event in Aspen, Colorado, in February 2015, Bloomberg said, \u201c95 percent of your murders \u2014 murderers and murder victims fit one M.O. You can just take the description, Xerox it, and pass it out to all the cops.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThey are male, minorities, 16 to 25. That\u2019s true in New York. That\u2019s true in virtually every city\u2026And the way you get the guns out of the kids\u2019 hands is to throw them up against the wall and frisk them,\u201d he continued.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That statement is problematic because (a) it is factually incorrect and (b) it perpetuates the stereotype that most minorities are inherently violent people.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As Lott explained in a Fox News op-ed, \u201cAccording to the FBI data, among murderers whose race we knew, almost 44 percent of murderers were white. Unfortunately, the FBI doesn\u2019t break down the Hispanic murderers by race, but even if we assume all Hispanic murderers were white, at least 23 percent of murderers were non-Hispanic whites. We don\u2019t know the race of all murderers, but even if one assumes that all murderers whose race isn\u2019t identified are minorities, about 31 percent of murderers were white.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">SEE ALSO: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gunsamerica.com\/lott-1-4-million-new-concealed-carry-permits-issued-last-year\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"john-lott-on-bloombergs-racial-remarks-stop-and-frisk-initiative\" title=\"John Lott on Bloomberg\u2019s Racial Remarks, Stop-And-Frisk Initiative\">Lott: 1.4 Million New Concealed Carry Permits Issued Last Year<\/a><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Indiscriminately throwing young minorities against the wall isn\u2019t going to solve the issue of violence.\u00a0 What it will do, however, is terrorize a lot of responsible citizens while giving them a negative impression of law enforcement in the process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We do know that a small number of bad actors are ultimately responsible for the majority of crime.\u00a0 It\u2019s hard to quantify precisely, but some estimates suggest that half of all crime is committed by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politifact.com\/factchecks\/2015\/oct\/06\/dan-patrick\/dan-patrick-says-all-crime-estimate-committed-15-p\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"john-lott-on-bloombergs-racial-remarks-stop-and-frisk-initiative\" title=\"John Lott on Bloomberg\u2019s Racial Remarks, Stop-And-Frisk Initiative\">5-8 percent of the population<\/a>.\u00a0 What\u2019s also true is that authorities usually have a good idea who these perps are even though they may not have the evidence to arrest and prosecute them.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If we as a society are going to target anyone to disarm, it should be the known criminals and repeat offenders who have through some failure (or limitation) in our justice system slipped through the cracks and are back out on the streets.\u00a0 Random citizens who look a certain way or live in a particular neighborhood should not be harassed simply because they fit a certain racially-biased profile.\u00a0 \u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What&#8217;s more, and Lott mentions this as well, is that minorities are more likely to be victims of violent crime. As a result, they are the ones who benefit the most from permissive concealed carry laws.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We&#8217;ve witnessed this recently in Detroit where the local police chief has openly encouraged residents to carry concealed firearms.  Murders are their lowest in 50 years and justifiable homicide rates are<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gunsamerica.com\/detroit-justifiable-homicides-25-times-national-average\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"john-lott-on-bloombergs-racial-remarks-stop-and-frisk-initiative\" title=\"John Lott on Bloomberg\u2019s Racial Remarks, Stop-And-Frisk Initiative\"> 25 times the national average<\/a>!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Turns out that empowering citizens to exercise their right to keep and bear arms is an effective way to combat violent criminals.  When we can&#8217;t put violent offenders behind bars or when we fail to disarm them on the streets,  the next best thing, if not the best thing, is to ensure good guys have the tools they need to defend themselves and their loved ones from those that might do them harm.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sadly, presidential candidate Michael Bloomberg does not see it that way.
