(Photo: Wikimedia Commons)<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Democratic Majority Leader of the Virginia State Senate admitted over the weekend to blocking a pay raise for Virginia sheriffs for their support of the Second Amendment sanctuary movement. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sen. Richard \u201cDick\u201d L. Saslaw told Republican Senator Bill Stanley after a floor session that the Democrats had blocked the three percent pay raise because, according to Sen. Stanley\u2019s recollection, \u201cthey came to our committees and said that they weren\u2019t going to enforce our laws.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Stanley made the allegation in a Facebook post, and Saslaw admitted to the retributive move in an interview with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wtvr.com\/news\/local-news\/lawmaker-cites-refusal-to-enforce-gun-laws-as-reason-for-deputy-pay-raise-controversy?fbclid=IwAR047Dt1mvERDhwgbQ3tuvpIyZncb7CHkoF85kkEcG21Xff_hTQKci_uUwc\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"democratic-virginia-senator-retaliating-against-sheriffs\" title=\"'I said it': Democratic Virginia Senator Admits to Retaliating Against Sheriffs Who Supported Sanctuary Movement\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">local media<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cHe didn\u2019t lie&#8230;I said it,\u201d Saslaw admitted. \u201cAll I said\nwas a lot of people are upset that these people come in and say they\u2019re not\ngoing to enforce our laws. That\u2019s all.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In Stanley\u2019s original post, which has so far garnered over 20,000 shares, he recounted how his proposal to give all sheriffs a three percent pay raise was blocked by Senate Democrats. After the vote, Sen. Saslaw approached him and said, \u201cHey Stanley, you want to know why your sheriffs didn\u2019t get a raise? \u2014because they came to our committees and said that they weren\u2019t going to enforce our laws.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When Sen. Stanley asked which laws Saslaw was referring to,\nhe responded, \u201cGun control.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI was shocked that the Democrats are now punishing our\nlocal Sheriff\u2019s Departments (by eliminating a pay raise for them), for their\nchoice to protect and defend our citizens\u2019 Second Amendment rights,\u201d Stanley\nconcluded. \u201cDemocrats want to restrict a citizen\u2019s right to protect themselves,\nbut won\u2019t pay our sheriffs\u2019 deputies to protect Virginians. Hypocrisy has a\nname.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Stanley also published a video of the floor debate in which\nthe Democrats claim they blocked the raise because the budget wouldn\u2019t allow\nfor it. The video points out that the raise would have required the state to set\naside only $9 million in the first year out of a $140 billion two-year budget. Republican\nSenators also noted during the debate that there is $10 million in unappropriated\nfunds in the current year, and future years could be covered by cutting certain\nprograms. <\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Virginia Sheriff Patrick McCranie was one of the sheriffs who supported the Second Amendment sanctuary movement in his county, and he argued on Facebook that the state senate could have held the raise for sheriffs while still giving one to the deputies. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI had a strong feeling this was going to happen,\u201d he said. \u201cThe men and women who work as deputies throughout Virginia deserved a raise. If the General Assembly wanted to leave Sheriff&#8217;s out that would have been fine. I am sorry and feel very dejected but I will never stop fighting for our men and women.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n<p>This is unlikely to be the last retribution against Virginia sheriffs who support the Second Amendment. In December, Virginia Gov. Ralph Northam <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/wtkr.com\/2019\/12\/11\/gov-northam-says-localities-could-face-consequences-if-law-enforcement-officers-dont-enforce-gun-laws\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"democratic-virginia-senator-retaliating-against-sheriffs\" title=\"'I said it': Democratic Virginia Senator Admits to Retaliating Against Sheriffs Who Supported Sanctuary Movement\" target=\"_blank\">threatened<\/a> that there would be \u201cconsequences\u201d if sheriffs refused to enforce gun control laws.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When asked if there would be \u201cretaliation\u201d for Second Amendment sanctuary sheriffs, he denied it.
