George Zimmerman announced on Tuesday his intention to sue for defamation Pete Buttigieg and Elizabeth Warren over tweets sent by the Democratic presidential candidates on what would have been Trayvon Martin\u2019s birthday earlier this month.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In a lawsuit<\/a> filed in circuit court in Polk County, Florida, Zimmerman lawyer Larry Klayman accuses Buttigieg and Warren of \u201cdefamation with actual malice or at a minimum a reckless disregard for the truth.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The candidates\u2019 tweets \u201cdefamed Zimmerman for political gain\nin misguided and malicious attempts to bolster their standings amongst\nAfrican-American voters, all at Zimmerman\u2019s expense.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The lawsuit alleges that though the tweets don\u2019t mention Zimmerman by name, they nonetheless created a \u201cfalse impression of\u2026 Zimmerman, which\u2026 caused irreparable harm to him, his business and person and his calling, as well as to his good will and reputation, as well as harmed his family.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The lawsuit is seeking damages \u201cin excess of $265 million for loss of good will and reputation and financial and other damages as pled above in all counts.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Zimmerman shot and killed 17-year-old Florida resident\nTrayvon Martin in 2012 after Zimmerman claims the teenager attacked him.\nZimmerman was acquitted of all charges in a 2013 trial, but the case sparked a\nnational debate about race, gun rights, and \u201cstand your ground\u201d laws along with\nthe Black Lives Matter movement. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Both Buttigieg and Warren used the anniversary of Martin\u2019s\nbirthday to tie the incident to racism and gun violence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cTrayvon Martin would have been 25 today,\u201d said a tweet\nposted to the verified Twitter account for Buttigieg on Feb. 5. \u201cHow many 25th\nbirthdays have been stolen from us by white supremacy, gun violence, prejudice,\nand fear? #BlackLivesMatter\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Warren also tweeted, \u201cMy heart goes out to @SybrinaFulton [Trayvon\u2019s mother] and Trayvon\u2019s family and friends. He should still be with us today. We need to end gun violence and racism. And we need to build a world where all of our children \u2014 especially young Black boys \u2014 can grow up safe and free.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This isn\u2019t the first time Zimmerman has been in the news since the 2012 incident. In 2015, Zimmerman was injured in a shooting<\/a> involving another man with whom he had been having an \u201congoing dispute.\u201d In 2016, he made headlines<\/a> for attempting to auction off the Kel-Tel PF9 he used to shoot Martin, and in 2019, he announced<\/a> his intention to sue Martin\u2019s family for using fake witnesses to indict him. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
