And in battleground districts, voters support stronger gun laws by an even larger 54% to 10% margin.\u00a0<\/li><li>Over three-quarters of Texas voters (78% statewide; 86% of battleground voters), including 84% of voters who support stronger gun laws, consider a candidate\u2019s position on guns \u201cvery important\u201d to their vote in 2020.<\/li><li>Vast majorities of voters statewide and in battleground districts \u2014 including undecided voters, gun owners, Latino voters and suburban women \u2014 support individual gun safety measures, including blocking domestic abusers from having guns (91% statewide; 89% in battleground districts), requiring background checks on all gun sales (87% statewide; 82% in battleground districts), and red flag laws (80% statewide; 77% in battleground districts).<\/li><li>Sixty percent of voters, including a majority of Republican women (57%) and voters in battleground districts (58%) say they would never vote for a candidate who doesn\u2019t support background checks on all gun sales. Compared with other candidate positions on issues like health care, national security and immigration, opposition to background checks on all gun sales is the single most disqualifying candidate position among suburban women by a nine-point margin, and tied for the top among Latino voters by a three-point margin.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"328\" title=\"Everytown Dropping  Million to Turn Texas Anti-Gun in 2020\" src=\"https:\/\/www.gunsamerica.com\/digest\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/GunSensePolling-1024x328.png\" alt=\"Everytown Dropping  Million to Turn Texas Anti-Gun in 2020\" class=\"wp-image-124770\" srcset=\"https:\/\/gunsamerica.com\/digest\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/GunSensePolling-1024x328.png 1024w, https:\/\/gunsamerica.com\/digest\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/GunSensePolling-400x128.png 400w, https:\/\/gunsamerica.com\/digest\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/GunSensePolling-150x48.png 150w, https:\/\/gunsamerica.com\/digest\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/GunSensePolling-768x246.png 768w, https:\/\/gunsamerica.com\/digest\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/GunSensePolling.png 1200w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption>(<em>Photo: Everytown<\/em>)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As with all polls, the devils in the details.\u00a0 That is to say, how the questions are phrased.\u00a0 Asking one if one supports \u201crequiring background check on all gun sales\u201d is much different than asking one if one supports \u201ccriminalizing private transfers.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Wonder what the results of the poll would look like if the question was: Should it be illegal for you to let your cousin borrow your rifle to go hunting for the afternoon?\u00a0 Or, should you be arrested for selling your Glock 19 to your neighbor? \u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">SEE ALSO: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gunsamerica.com\/everytown-distances-bloomberg-comments-but-addicted-to-his-billions\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"everytown-dropping-8-million-to-turn-texas-anti-gun-in-2020\" title=\"Everytown Dropping $8 Million to Turn Texas Anti-Gun in 2020\">Everytown Distances Bloomberg Comments But Addicted to His Billions<\/a><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Because that\u2019s really what\u2019s at stake with \u201cuniversal background check\u201d (UBC) legislation.&nbsp; Gun shops already are required to run background checks at the point of sale.&nbsp; Only private sales and transfers are allowed to proceed without a NICS check. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, if one knows or has reason to believe the person one is selling or transferring a gun to is a prohibited person (felon, domestic abuser, minor, drug addict, etc.), it\u2019s illegal for him or her to do so.&nbsp; In other words, existing law already bans criminals from transferring or selling guns to one another, or to other prohibited persons. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Why do we need UBCs then?\u00a0 The answer is, of course, we don\u2019t.\u00a0 Unless the agenda is to chill the 2A rights of law-abiding citizens.\u00a0 Which is exactly the goal of Everytown. \u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One can apply the same scrutiny to the other legislative goals of Everytown.&nbsp; The truth is existing federal law already prohibits convicted domestic abusers from possessing firearms and allows for authorities to monitor or, if need be, detain or involuntarily commit credible threats to public safety.&nbsp; Why then do we need red flag laws?
