A recent gun rights rally at the capital drew five times more attendees than usual as protestors lobbied against an \u201cassault weapons\u201d ban, a magazine ban, and a universal background check bill.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;There is a Senate bill regarding a ban of assault weapons and we don&#8217;t agree with that bill,&#8221; one attendee, David Edie, told <a href=\"https:\/\/www.azcentral.com\/story\/news\/local\/phoenix-breaking\/2020\/02\/15\/phoenix-2nd-amendment-rally-support-gun-rights-has-largest-turnout-ever-organizers-say\/4772304002\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"arizona-gun-owners-fighting-ban\" title=\"Arizona Gun Owners Fighting 'Assault Weapons' Ban, Universal Background Checks\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">AZ Central<\/a>. &#8220;We&#8217;re here to show our support for the Second Amendment and our right to bear arms.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Another attendee, Carolyn Sherman, acknowledged that gun control\nbills have little chance of passing the Republican-controlled legislature, but also\nencouraged gun owners to stay vigilant. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Even if they&#8217;re not passed now, it&#8217;s sort of chipping away\nat the wall,&#8221; she said. &#8220;The more you chip at it, the more it cracks,\nand the more it cracks, the more rubble falls, and pretty soon the wall comes\ndown.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Rally organizers told AZ Central that the largest turnout before this year was about 500 people. Gun control bills are unlikely to reach the governor\u2019s\ndesk, but that hasn\u2019t stopped gun control proponents from introducing\nlegislation to limit Second Amendment rights. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.azleg.gov\/legtext\/54leg\/2R\/bills\/SB1625P.htm\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"arizona-gun-owners-fighting-ban\" title=\"Arizona Gun Owners Fighting 'Assault Weapons' Ban, Universal Background Checks\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">Senate Bill 1625<\/a> was introduced by Democratic Senator Rebecca Rios and co-sponsored by 11 additional Democratic senators. The bill would ban the manufacture, importation, possession, purchase, sale, or transfer of \u201cassault weapons\u201d as well as magazines capable of holding more than 10 rounds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Anyone in possession of illegal magazines before the law\u2019s effective date would be required to remove the items from the state, destroy them, or surrender them. The law would require owners of \u201cassault weapons\u201d to do the same, but also allows eligible possessors to register their rifles with the state. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">SEE ALSO: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gunsamerica.com\/virginia-senate-blocks-assault-weapons\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"arizona-gun-owners-fighting-ban\" title=\"Arizona Gun Owners Fighting 'Assault Weapons' Ban, Universal Background Checks\">With Dems Help, Virginia Senate Blocks \u2018Assault Weapons\u2019 Ban (For Now)<\/a><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.azleg.gov\/legtext\/54leg\/2R\/bills\/SB1624P.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"arizona-gun-owners-fighting-ban\" title=\"Arizona Gun Owners Fighting 'Assault Weapons' Ban, Universal Background Checks\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">Senate Bill 1624<\/a> would prohibit the private sale of firearms by requiring that all sales be conducted via a federally licensed dealer. The law requires a prospective firearm seller to surrender his or her firearm to a dealer, who must conduct a background check on the prospective buyer. If the buyer is a prohibited person, the dealer must also conduct a background check on the seller before returning the firearm. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The law makes some exceptions to this requirement.
