(Photo: VCDL Facebook)<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A Virginia Senate committee voted today to delay a bill that would have banned any new sales of AR-type semi-automatic rifles, magazines capable of holding more than 12 rounds, and suppressors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Four Democratic Senators joined six Republicans in the Senate Judiciary Committee to delay passage of the bill until 2021. In the meantime, the bill will be sent to the state crime commission to study the issue and make recommendations, according to <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.whsv.com\/content\/news\/Virginia-Senate-rejects-assault-weapon-ban-567938451.html\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"virginia-senate-blocks-assault-weapons\" title=\"With Dems Help, Virginia Senate Blocks 'Assault Weapons' Ban (For Now)\" target=\"_blank\">local media<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After the <a href=\"https:\/\/lis.virginia.gov\/cgi-bin\/legp604.exe?201+vot+S03V0361+HB0961\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"virginia-senate-blocks-assault-weapons\" title=\"With Dems Help, Virginia Senate Blocks 'Assault Weapons' Ban (For Now)\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">10-5 vote<\/a>, spectators in the committee room broke into applause, and the Virginia Citizens Defense League President Phil Van Cleave credited Second Amendment advocates with the victory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cCongratulations, VCDL!&nbsp;Your phone calls, emails, attendance at the Second Amendment Sanctuary hearings, attendance at General Assembly committee hearings, and attendance at Lobby Day has paid off &#8211; HB 961, the \u2018assault weapon\u2019\/higher-capacity magazine\/suppressor\/bump stock ban, is DEAD for the year!\u201d Van Cleave said in an email to supporters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">The gallery breaks out into cheers and applause in the Virgnia Senate Judiciary Committee as they vote to not move forward with HB961, otherwise known as @GovNortham&#8217;s &#8220;assault firearms&#8221; ban. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/c6Kxc88f0w\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"virginia-senate-blocks-assault-weapons\" title=\"With Dems Help, Virginia Senate Blocks 'Assault Weapons' Ban (For Now)\">pic.twitter.com\/c6Kxc88f0w<\/a><\/p>\u2014 Washington Examiner (@dcexaminer) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/dcexaminer\/status\/1229423742566227971?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"virginia-senate-blocks-assault-weapons\" title=\"With Dems Help, Virginia Senate Blocks 'Assault Weapons' Ban (For Now)\">February 17, 2020<\/a><\/blockquote> \n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">SEE ALSO: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gunsamerica.com\/virginia-advances-assault-weapons\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"virginia-senate-blocks-assault-weapons\" title=\"With Dems Help, Virginia Senate Blocks 'Assault Weapons' Ban (For Now)\">Virginia Advances \u2018Assault Weapons\u2019 Ban in House<\/a><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The National Rifle Association also credited the committee\u2019s decision to the thousands of Virginia gun owners who have supported the Second Amendment sanctuary movement and visited the state capitol to lobby legislators.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThanks to Second Amendment supporters\naround the Commonwealth ceaselessly voicing their opposition to a sweeping gun\nban, the Senate Judiciary Committee voted 10-5 to reject House Bill 961 on\nFebruary 17,\u201d the NRA said on its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nraila.org\/articles\/20200217\/virginia-gun-ban-bill-defeated\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"virginia-senate-blocks-assault-weapons\" title=\"With Dems Help, Virginia Senate Blocks 'Assault Weapons' Ban (For Now)\">website<\/a>.\n\u201cBloomberg\u2019s House majority in the General Assembly is not going to deliver their\nmost coveted agenda item to their billionaire master.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Van Cleave reported that thousands\nof gun owners packed the capitol building and flooded into the committee room. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Democratic Senators Deeds, Edwards,\nPetersen, and Surrovell joined Republicans Chafin, McDougle, Norment,\nObenshain, Stanley, and Stuart to block the measure for this year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Van Cleave warned gun owners not to get complacent but sounded a hopeful note moving forward.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cNext year, the battle will\ncontinue, but if we fight like we did this year, vote in every election, and\nsupport pro-gun candidates, we will continue to be a force to be reckoned with,\u201d\nhe said. \u201cWe dare not get complacent again.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The move comes as a significant setback for Virginia\u2019s Democratic Gov. Ralph Northam. Gov. Northam has pushed the legislature to institute an \u201cassault weapons\u201d ban for years, and Northam had hoped a version of the bill that included a grandfather clause could get through the Democrat-controlled Senate. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Senate is still considering a red flag law, a universal background check bill, and a bill that would allow local governments to impose their own gun control laws.
