You might as well be shooting at night. You can get away with it if you\u2019re using a rifle that lets you keep the scope on target, but otherwise, good luck. Trust me\u2014<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.gunsamerica.com\/thompson-center-lrr-full-review\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"spot-shot-wifi-scope-cam\" title=\"Spot Shot WiFi Scope Cam: A Good Spotter in a Pinch\" target=\"_blank\">I\u2019ve been there<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The solution is to find a friend who doesn\u2019t mind sitting\nbehind a spotting scope. A good spotter can provide quick, reliable\ninformation\u2014\u201cYou\u2019re two feet high and half a foot left\u201d\u2014so you can adjust your\npoint of aim before the wind changes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But I don\u2019t have friends. At least, none that are willing to spend an afternoon at the range on a weekday. (It\u2019s a tough life being a gun writer.) Opening the app provides an option to \u201cConnect,\u201d but each time I tried, my app displayed the message \u201cCannot proceed with Wi-Fi.\u201d Repeating this process with my wife\u2019s iPhone 7 yielded better results. The app connected immediately, and I was able to navigate to options for taking photos and recording video.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>(Update: I contacted SME\u2019s support team, and they said the\napp might not work with Google Pixel 3\u2019s. They\u2019re looking into the problem, but\nif you have one of Google\u2019s new phones, you might want to steer clear of the\nSpot Shot for now.) <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Shoot, View, and\nRecord Group Sizes <\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>I see two primary applications for the Spot Shot, both of\nwhich I\u2019ve been testing over the last few months.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>First, the Spot Shot is handy for viewing and recording shot groups at a public range. The ability to take photos of targets allows users to record and analyze group sizes without having to collect the physical paper target. I found this functionality to be helpful at a range, where it\u2019s sometimes inconvenient to wait until a cease-fire or ask my fellow shooters to wait for me to collect my target. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" title=\"Spot Shot WiFi Scope Cam: A Good Spotter in a Pinch\" src=\"https:\/\/www.gunsamerica.com\/digest\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/ss-7-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"Spot Shot WiFi Scope Cam: A Good Spotter in a Pinch\" class=\"wp-image-124326\" srcset=\"https:\/\/gunsamerica.com\/digest\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/ss-7-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/gunsamerica.com\/digest\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/ss-7-400x225.jpg 400w, https:\/\/gunsamerica.com\/digest\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/ss-7-150x84.jpg 150w, https:\/\/gunsamerica.com\/digest\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/ss-7-768x432.jpg 768w, https:\/\/gunsamerica.com\/digest\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/ss-7.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption><em>This photo was taken at 100 yards.<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s also nice when shooting groups with a red dot or other optics not able to see bullet holes at 100 yards. If you\u2019re by yourself (no friends, remember?), it\u2019s inconvenient to stand up or lean to the side to peer through a spotting scope after every shot or group. With my phone propped up in front of me, I was able to easily and quickly check my target even while shooting from the prone position. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"719\" title=\"Spot Shot WiFi Scope Cam: A Good Spotter in a Pinch\" src=\"https:\/\/www.gunsamerica.com\/digest\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/ss-4-1024x719.jpg\" alt=\"Spot Shot WiFi Scope Cam: A Good Spotter in a Pinch\" class=\"wp-image-124325\" srcset=\"https:\/\/gunsamerica.com\/digest\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/ss-4-1024x719.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/gunsamerica.com\/digest\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/ss-4-400x281.jpg 400w, https:\/\/gunsamerica.com\/digest\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/ss-4-150x105.jpg 150w, https:\/\/gunsamerica.com\/digest\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/ss-4-768x540.jpg 768w, https:\/\/gunsamerica.com\/digest\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/ss-4.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>A Virtual Spotter<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>But the Spot Shot\u2019s real potential lies in its ability to record shots at long distances and provide shot placement information. Recoil might keep you from seeing a dust cloud through a riflescope, but a review of the footage could reveal where your last shot landed. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The camera worked precisely as advertised. Picture quality will depend somewhat on the quality of your spotting scope, but looking through the <a href=\"https:\/\/vortexoptics.com\/vortex-viper-hd-20-60x85-spotting-scope-angled.html\" campaign=\"Vortex_Viper\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\">Vortex Viper 20-60&#215;85<\/a>\u00a0I used provides a much sharper image than what you see in the video. Still, it\u2019s possible to see the target at 600 yards, and moving out to 1000+ yards shouldn\u2019t be an issue on a day with good visibility.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>Besides, image wobble will obscure the target sooner than picture quality. This was my biggest frustration, and it\u2019s the most common critique in online reviews of this product. Even a slight breeze shakes the camera, and on a windy day, it\u2019s difficult to see your hits past about 500 yards. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Still, as you can see in the video below, a dust cloud is visible even on a windy day. On this day, the wind was blowing straight toward the camera at 10mph, and I was still able to see were my shots were landing, make a quick adjustment, and get on target. (This video is of targets at 330 yards).<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n<p>Even at 650 yards on a windy day, it&#8217;s possible to see missed shots. This was my first shot at that distance, and this video helped me get on target without wasting any additional ammunition (look low and to the right of the largest round target).<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n<p>I want to be clear: image wobble isn\u2019t a fault of the camera, per se. A super-solid, high-quality tripod should help calm the shake, but it\u2019s something to keep in mind if you haven\u2019t already invested in a nice tripod. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Conclusion<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>It isn\u2019t perfect, but for the money, I think the Spot Shot is worth it\u2014especially if you do a lot of shooting by yourself.
