<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Well, that didn\u2019t take long.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After only one\nsemester at Harvard University, anti-gun activist David Hogg has already\nstarted making bizarre claims about race, history, and gun control. It\u2019s not\nthe 19-year-old\u2019s first off-the-wall comment (far from it), but this revisionist\nhistory sounds like something that can only originate in our centers of higher\nlearning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In a tweet\nposted earlier this week, Hogg appeared to claim that the \u201cgun violence\nprevention movement\u201d was started \u201ccenturies ago\u201d by \u201calmost entirely black,\nbrown and indigenous lgbtq women and non binary people.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This is a tweet for for the founders of the gun violence prevention movement started centuries ago by almost entirely black, brown and indigenous lgbtq women and non binary people that never got on the news or in most history books.

As noted by the\nWashington\nExaminer<\/a>, Hogg has a history of making strange connections between the gun\nrights debate and racial issues. Last year he said in an interview with MSNBC\nthat pro-gun culture has roots in genocide and white supremacy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“I think\nit comes down to reckoning with our history and our history of white supremacy\nin the United States and the fact that we live in a post-genocidal society\noftentimes that was orchestrated by the United States government,” he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

If it isn\u2019t already obvious, gun control didn\u2019t originate in \u201cnon-binary\u201d communities in the 1800\u2019s. In fact, gun control has a long history of racial discrimination, as we\u2019ve covered here<\/a>, here<\/a>, and here<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

After slavery was outlawed, many gun-control laws were written with the sole intent of restricting gun ownership for African Americans. That mindset has continued in more recent years with the prohibition of cheap firearms (e.g., \u201cSaturday Nigh Specials\u201d), and may-issue concealed carry permit laws that allow law enforcement to deny the right to bear arms to certain groups of people. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The truth is, the right to keep and bear arms was a critical component of the Civil Rights movement in the 1960s, and both Rosa Parks and Martin Luther King, Jr., obtained gun licenses<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It\u2019s unclear who or what Hogg is referencing in his tweet, but it\u2019s a historical fact that most \u201cindigenous women\u201d in our country\u2019s history would have appreciated less gun control, not more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
