Heritage Manufacturing made a name for itself producing cowboy-style single-action revolvers for a lower price point than almost any other gun maker. Now they\u2019re offering that same basic concept but in a rifle configuration: the Heritage Rough Rider Rancher. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

We caught up with them at SHOT Show 2020 to see this quirky\nrifle for ourselves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cLast year we came out with the Heritage Rough Rider\nrevolver with a 16-inch barrel, and people loved it, but all along I knew I wanted\nto come out with this product,\u201d company spokesman Olivier Colombier said. \u201cIt\u2019s\nsomething we\u2019ve been working on all of last year.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Rancher isn\u2019t a feature-rich firearm, but it does come standard with several attractive components.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

First, the buckhorn adjustable rear sight combines with a\ndrift-adjustable front brass bead sight to give users a high, clear sight\npicture. The rear sight can be adjusted for elevation using a simple notch system\nand the front sight can be adjusted for windage by drifting the sight left or\nright. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The walnut stock is attractive, and it\u2019s compatible with the Winchester 9422 stock. This compatibility gives users some aftermarket options for swapping stocks for a different color or wood type. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Eagle-eyed readers will notice that the Rancher doesn\u2019t utilize a handguard. While it takes a lot of shooting to heat up a .22 barrel with a single-action revolver, most shooters don\u2019t relish having to steady any rifle by holding a naked barrel. There\u2019s also a chance that an off hand will get blasted with hot gasses escaping from the gap between the cylinder and the barrel. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

To address these concerns while maintaining the rifle\u2019s\nquirky look, Heritage engineers included what looks like a second trigger affixed\nto the bottom of the trigger guard. They designed this for users to grab with\nthe index finger of their off hand to steady the rifle and pull it towards\ntheir shoulder. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Rancher comes standard with a leather sling along with an MSRP consistent with Heritage\u2019s other offerings. Customers will be able to order the Rancher soon for an MSRP of $297, which should be even lower at a dealer. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
