<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As you may have heard, Virginia Democrats have promised to pass new gun-control legislation<\/a> in 2020. \u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And as you also may have heard, this flagrant assault on the 2A rights of Virginians has created a groundswell of backlash<\/a> as more than 75 of the state\u2019s 95 counties have passed resolutions declaring themselves, \u201cSecond Amendment Sanctuaries,\u201d meaning they will not observe nor enforce any law that infringes on one\u2019s right to keep and bear arms. \u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This face-off between pro-gun forces at the municipal and grassroots level and their anti-gun opposition in the Legislature raises an obvious question, who wins when the rubber meets the road?\u00a0 Say the Dems do pass all eight proposals (see list below), what happens when a large percentage of the population does not come to heel. \u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Democratic Gov. Ralph Northam said while there will not be \u201cretaliation\u201d there will be \u201cconsequences\u201d for those who openly flout the law.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

“There’s not going to be retaliation. That’s not what I’m about. I’m about making Virginia safer,\u201d said Northam on Wednesday.<\/a> \u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“If we have constitutional laws on the books and law enforcement officers are not enforcing those laws on the books, then there are going to be consequences,\u201d he continued. \u201cBut I’ll cross that bridge if and when we get to it.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Gov. Northam did no spell out exactly what he meant by consequences.\u00a0 He did clarify that he would not confiscate firearms under the proposed ban on so-called \u201cassault weapons.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“We’re not going to take people’s guns away,” said the governor. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Democratic Virginia Rep. Donald McEachin (4th District) did have some ideas as to what those consequences could be.\u00a0 One way to get counties to fall in line is to cut funding; another, he said, was to bring in the national guard.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThey certainly risk funding, because if the sheriff’s department is not going to enforce the law, they’re going to lose money. The counties’ attorneys offices are not going to have the money to prosecute because their prosecutions are going to go down,\u201d he told the Washington Examiner.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAnd ultimately, I’m not the governor, but the governor may have to nationalize the National Guard to enforce the law,\u201d he continued. \u201cThat’s his call, because I don’t know how serious these counties are and how severe the violations of law will be. But that’s obviously an option he has.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Bringing in the National Guard to quell the resistance and arrest citizens who violate these unconstitutional measures would be a disaster. Let us hope that Northam has more sense than that. We’ll have to wait and see what happens. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
