<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Racism?  Or just a clever marketing ploy?  Maybe a bit of both?<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Those are the questions people are asking themselves with respect to a sign Lance Perkins posted in front of his gun shop in Pembroke, Ontario earlier this month. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The sign read: <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cGUN DEALS<\/p>\n\n\n\n

ALL YOU PEOPLE<\/p>\n\n\n\n

COME ON IN<\/p>\n\n\n\n

WHITE FRIDAY SALE\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Perkins, who owns Perkins Guns and Ammo, was adamant that his ad was not racist.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cMy \u2018White Friday\u2019 sale in regards to selling guns or crossbows or anything in the store, had nothing to do with colour, it\u2019s just a sale\u2026we\u2019re allowed to have sales in Canada\u201d, he told News Ottawa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As for why he went with White<\/em> Friday instead of Black<\/em> Friday, he said the word \u201cblack\u201d elicits negative emotions because of Prime Minister Justin Trudeau\u2019s blackface controversy<\/a>.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThis year I don\u2019t really know why people got offended by the use of the word \u2018white.\u2019  I couldn\u2019t use the word \u2018black\u2019 because of Trudeau using blackface,\u201d he explained.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAll you see in the newspaper is Black Fridays\u2026Black Fridays\u2026and you know what, I said we\u2019re not American, let\u2019s go with a different shade, a different colour,\u201d he continued.  \u201cI picked white because it resembles white snow, it resembles Christmas. Why not go with something brighter than black.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If the White Friday sale wasn\u2019t enough to draw attention, the sign also contained another potentially divisive message: \u201cYou People.\u201d  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Popular Canadian Hockey commentator Don Cherry was fired this month for a rant<\/a> in which he used the phrasing \u201cyou people\u201d to allegedly refer to immigrants during a telecast.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cherry was trying to encourage people to buy a poppy flower to wear to support the Canadian military as part of the country\u2019s Remembrance Day, similar to our Memorial Day.   <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYou people love \u2014 you, that come here, whatever it is \u2014 you love our way of life, you love our milk and honey,\u201d Cherry said. \u201cAt least you could pay a couple of bucks for poppies or something like that. These guys paid for your way of life, that you enjoy in Canada.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Perkins believes that Cherry was wrongfully terminated and that his remarks weren\u2019t racist nor anti-immigrant.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI believe the man is a great Canadian, he did not pick out anybody in regards to race\u201d, he said. \u201cBut he wasn\u2019t racist\u2026he just said what was on his mind.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The sign in front of Perkins Guns and Ammo no longer says \u201cWhite Friday Sale\u201d or \u201cAll You People.\u201d  The owner said he\u2019s changed it, not because of the blowback but because he changes it every few days.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

It now contains the words, \u201cMerry Christmas.\u201d\u00a0 At least that’s not controversial, right? <\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n
