After years of false starts, former New York City mayor and billionaire anti-gun activist Michael Bloomberg has finally announced his candidacy for the Democratic presidential nomination.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Bloomberg is running on his record as the mayor of NYC as well as his financial backing of the gun-control group Everytown for Gun Safety and its volunteer wing, Moms Demand Action.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhen [Bloomberg] witnessed the terrible toll of gun\nviolence, he put his money where his heart is, helping to create a movement to\ntake on the NRA and the politicians they own, to protect families across the country\nand help turn the tide,\u201d reads his campaign launch ad.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Most recently, the Bloomberg-backed Everytown spent $2.5 million to turn the Virginia legislature from red the blue. The contribution from Bloomberg\u2019s group represented the largest donation from an outside organization and paves the way for Virginia Democrats to enact a slate of sweeping anti-gun legislation.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n

NYC\u2019s former mayor is apparently hoping he can purchase the\nWhite House in similar fashion. Bloomberg is spending at least $37 million to\npurchase ads in multiple states across the country, including California, New\nYork, Florida, Texas and Illinois, ABC News reported<\/a>.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For context, Democratic front-runners Sen. Bernie Sanders\nand South Bend Mayor Pete Buttigieg have aired about $2.8 million and $2.4\nmillion worth of television ads.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Bloomberg is also banking on support from the activist\norganizations he\u2019s helped launch in states across the country. Mother Jones reported<\/a>\nthis week that the Bloomberg campaign is temporarily \u201crenting\u201d Everytown\u2019s\nemail list in order to \u201ccommunicate [Bloomberg\u2019s] plans for achieving our\nshared goal of a nation free from gun violence.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The newly-minted candidate is also getting help from another organization he bankrolls, Bloomberg News. The news agency announced<\/a> this week that it will bar reporters from investigating Bloomberg, his family, or his foundation. It also committed to prohibiting all investigations into the other 2020 Democratic presidential candidates, but will continue to cover the Trump impeachment investigation. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hilariously, some high-profile members of Bloomberg\u2019s\nanti-gun groups have voiced their public opposition to their boss. Jessica\nCraven, the legislative lead for a Moms Demand Action group in Northeast Los\nAngeles, told BuzzFeed\nNews<\/a> that the 77-year-old won\u2019t be getting her vote in 2020.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI\u2019m not super psyched about it, but I respect him\nenormously,\u201d Craven said. \u201cI don\u2019t think we need more candidates \u2014 more white\nmale candidates.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Bloomberg and Everytown have supported some of the nation\u2019s\nmost extreme gun control policies, including universal background checks, an \u201cassault\nrifle\u201d ban, national red flag laws, magazine bans, and \u201csmart gun\u201d requirements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Gun owners can expect the race\u2019s newest candidate to push many of those proposals if he succeeds in purchasing the White House. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
