<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Security 9 series of handguns is Ruger’s latest for personal protection, carry on the job and safety at home. Named after their famous Security Six family of revolvers, the Security 9 lineup is made up of today’s preferred everyday carry pistols, in particular, polymer-framed, double-stack semi-automatic handguns. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

And while the Security 9 series now includes pistols chambered for 9mm Luger and .40 S&W, it has included one design feature that’s becoming less and less common for handguns, whether it’s for self-defense or duty, and that’s a manual thumb safety. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

With the new Security 9 Pro series, Ruger’s dropping that feature and instead going with … nothing at all. And that is exactly what a lot of people are looking for when it comes to their handguns. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Starting with the Ruger Security 9 Pro and Security 9 Compact Pro Ruger’s done away with the right-hand manual thumb safety, which means users will have to rely on the guns’ internal safeties and passive trigger safety. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It’s a small change but for some gun owners, it can be a deal-breaker. The bulk of the popular and successful service pistols on the market today either don’t have manual safeties or they carry manual thumb safeties as an option. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

When split seconds count, thumb safeties add time and complexity to already stressful situations. They take extra practice to use and can vary enough from gun to gun that a large percentage of shooters simply don’t want them on their guns in the first place. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

So just like that, the Ruger Security 9 Pro and Compact Pro don’t come with thumb safeties. Everything else is the same, spec-wise, although the Pros do come with improved sights. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Pro is a medium service-size pistol with a 15+1-round capacity in 9mm. It has a 4-inch barrel and full-length accessory rail. It has a small slide release and magazine release button on the left side for right-handed use. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Compact Pro has a 10+1-round capacity with flush magazines and can be used with extended 15-round magazines or flush magazines with extended floorplates for a longer grip. The Compact Pro has a shorter 3.4-inch barrel that’s better suited for everyday carry. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Pro weighs just under 24 ounces unloaded and the Compact just under 22 which is standard for their class. Both have glass-reinforced Nylon frames and alloy steel slides and barrels. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The one nice upgrade that comes with every Pro is night sights. Instead of the standard chunky polymer sights the Pro series comes with Hi-Viz steel tritium-powered 3-dot night sights. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

All that for not much more as the Pros carry a $549 MSRP compared to the base model’s $379. The difference covers the night sights plus an extra magazine; the Pro series pistols each come with three, not two magazines. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

And as always Ruger products typically cost less in the real world and online. Definitely keep your eyes peeled for deals on Ruger products this holiday season. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
