There are two elements of accurate shooting that cannot be argued: You must point the muzzle at the target, and you must operate the trigger without adding any additional movement to the muzzle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That\u2019s it. We could make it more complicated, but let\u2019s not. Those two rules come from a pretty solid source \u2014 George Harris and the folks at the SIG Sauer Academy. Harris is co-founder of the academy and author of the SIG Principles<\/a>, the elements used as the basis for training at the world-renowned shooting school.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cSIG,\u201d said Harris recently, \u201cstands for \u2018Simple Is Good.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And, at the academy, instructors provide simple,\nobjective-based training that allows you to improve your skill level regardless\nof your starting point upon arrival.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There is one mantra that I heard over and over during my\nweek-long instructor-training course: Float the dot. Shoot the shot.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I heard it over and over because after I figured out how\nimportant it was, I would constantly repeat it under my breath, especially when\nwe were on the 25-yard line, shooting the 8-inch circle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cFloat the dot. Shoot the shot.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So where did this simple yet profound statement come from?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThis simple, easy-to-remember phrase comes from a lengthy\nprocess,\u201d said Steve Gilcreast, senior instructor and training manager at the\nSIG Sauer Academy. \u201cWe first start with a simple concept: muzzle management and\ntrigger finger discipline. This concept is the basis for firearms safety. The\nsimple concept also relates to success with the pistol. Muzzle management means\nthat you point the muzzle at the intended target and trigger finger discipline\nrefers to manipulating the trigger without adding additional motion to the\nmuzzle. Maintain those two things and you will hit your target. You can\u2019t argue\nthese points.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

In order to ensure that your muzzle is pointed at the\ntarget, you must use your sights. Holding a correct sight picture on target is\na noble goal, but we all know that everyone shakes. No one can hold perfectly\nstill. No matter what you do, there will be movement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cFloating the dot indicates there will be some acceptable\nmovement of the sights on the target,\u201d said Gilcreast, who has been on staff at\nthe SIG Sauer Academy full time since 2011. \u201cAdditionally, I simply need you to\nfocus on the front sight dot on the center of the target. After you\u2019ve achieved\nthat visual dot on the center of your target, you can then manipulate the\ntrigger to shoot the shot without moving the dot off the intended\ntarget.\u201d   <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Gilcreast said this simple term continues to remind\ninstructors and shooters of how simple shooting a pistol really is. This\nconcept also reinforces the SIG principle of focusing on only what is necessary\nto be successful. It is only when training becomes overly complicated that it\nbecomes difficult. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The idea and terminology were originally used for older shooters who were having trouble focusing on the front sight and establishing a good sight picture. The system worked so well and was so easy to teach that it very quickly became a standard training method for everyone on the firing line at the SIG Sauer Academy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cOriginally the idea of just simply focusing on the center\nfront sight dot was used with aged-eye shooters who had difficulty seeing the\nsights,\u201d Gilcreast said. \u201cEventually we realized this simple idea worked for\nevery shooter and simplified the visual process of aligning the sights\nand acquiring an acceptable sight picture.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As I mentioned earlier, it\u2019s tough to argue with\nself-evident realities, and reality-based training is the name of the game at\nSIG. For instance: The goal is for the bullet to hit the target. If the muzzle\nis pointed at the target when the shot is fired, the bullet will<\/em> hit the\ntarget. The objective then is to point the muzzle at the target (for that you\nneed to use the sights) and operate the trigger without moving the muzzle off\nthe target. Simple.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe provide objective-based training that utilizes a\nshooter\u2019s natural abilities,\u201d Gilcreast said. \u201cIn everything we do, we\ndemonstrate options and provide multiple techniques or methods of meeting an\nobjective. This gives folks the freedom to try new things to meet an objective\nthat best fits their abilities. We then continue to demonstrate ways to refine,\ndevelop and become more efficient at those techniques.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Additionally, Gilcreast said this same concept could be\nutilized with red-dot sights. Simply put, whether it\u2019s iron sights or a red-dot\nsight, shooters can use the same methods, terminology and natural abilities to\nsimplify the shooting process and have immediate success. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

After you have embraced the concept of floating the dot, you\nmust work to effectively shoot the shot. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Trigger control is a matter of manipulating the trigger\nsmoothly to keep the sight on target. Some instructors say you should \u201cpress\u201d\nthe trigger; others say you should \u201csqueeze\u201d the trigger. The objective-based\ntraining system at the SIG Sauer Academy doesn\u2019t provide such a rigid\ndefinition. Shooters are instructed to \u201coperate\u201d the trigger, and instructors\nprovide suggestions about subtle changes in grip pressure and finger positions\nuntil the shooter is comfortable and consistent in achieving the objective.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIn my opinion, the \u2018shoot the shot\u2019 portion of this phrase\nrefers to trigger control. For many reasons, trigger control can be the most\ndifficult for folks to master. Understanding the mechanics and psychology\nbehind proper trigger control is critical and very perishable,\u201d Gilcreast said.\n\u201cThat\u2019s why we encourage people to continue to practice utilizing this phrase\nas a reminder.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Clearly the instructors want \u2014 and the shooter needs \u2014 smooth trigger operation to keep the sights on target while taking the shot, but short of that simple instruction, the objective, not the minutia of the technique, is the most important element. The goal is to hit the target. To that end, all you need to do is \u201cfloat the dot, and shoot the shot.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
