<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mr. Ron Berler, a published author, has an excellent, excellent<\/em> solution to eliminate gun-related violence and mass murder: Outlaw standard bullets and create new, \u201crecalibrated\u201d rounds.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In a recent op-ed<\/a> published by The Hartford Courant, Mr. Berler explained how his amazing<\/em> program would work. \u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cToday, one can walk into a gun shop and purchase, for instance, a .22, .38, or .44-caliber handgun. Most firearms are built to accommodate one size round only,\u201d explains Berler.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cSo here\u2019s what would happen if the manufacture of today\u2019s standard-size rounds were outlawed, and .23, .39 and .46-caliber rounds took their place: Eventually, gun owners would run out of the old ammo, and their weapons would become paperweights,\u201d says Berler. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Genius!<\/em>\u00a0 Why didn\u2019t I think of that???<\/p>\n\n\n\n

New firearms would have to be manufactured to fit the new ammo.\u00a0 Most likely they\u2019d be restricted to break-action and single-shot guns.\u00a0 No more semi-auto handguns or long guns.\u00a0 And, in order to purchase these guns, citizens would have to register them with the government.\u00a0 It would be a \u201cnational gun policy do-over,\u201d according to Berler.\u00a0 <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Wait a minute… Registration. Massive limitations on civilian gun ownership. <\/em> That sounds exactly like what they have down in Mexico.\u00a0 And that works great!\u00a0<\/a> Right?\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Of course, law enforcement and the military would be able to keep the old ammo and guns.\u00a0 Only law-abiding citizens would be forced into purchasing the new stuff.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Again, this is a brilliant<\/em> idea.\u00a0 Because the 2A was written to protect hunting rights, not to ensure the citizenry was capable of keeping government tyranny in check. \u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cA democracy sometimes requires that we sacrifice convenience for the public good. Passing through airport security is a hassle, but we accept it to help keep us safe. So would this proposal,\u201d writes Berler. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cLaw-abiding citizens could still own guns. And that is all the second amendment promises. It does not prohibit federal or state governments from regulating the type of weapon one may own,\u201d he concludes. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Berler’s correct. Because that whole “Shall not be infringed” line of the 2A was a gaffe<\/em>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

I was obviously joking.\u00a0 This is the dumbest idea I\u2019ve read in a long, long time.\u00a0 It belongs in “The Onion.” \u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mr. Berler.\u00a0 It\u2019s called reloading!\u00a0 You should look into it.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And after you research reloading, examine the data on how criminals obtain their guns.\u00a0 Turns out, only a small percentage (1.5 percent per one scholarly study<\/a>) of them buy them from gun stores.\u00a0 The vast majority of outlaws steal them, score them on the street, borrow them from a fellow gangster or use a straw purchaser. \u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nothing you\u2019ve proposed would shut down the black market nor prevent criminals from obtaining all the guns (new or old) and ammo that they wanted.\u00a0 In essence, your idea is as stupid as it is ineffectual. \u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n
