A county in Florida is the latest in a string of local municipalities across the country to declare itself a sanctuary against unconstitutional gun control laws — but the first in Florida to do so.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lake County Board of Commissioners voted unanimously this week to approve a resolution vowing not to enforce gun control measures that \u201cincrease the power of the Federal government far beyond that which the Constitution intended,\u201d according to the Orlando Sentinel<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The resolution\u2019s author, Lake County Commissioner Josh Blake, called out \u201cprominent national candidates\u201d and \u201cauthoritarian control freaks\u201d who call for gun bans and mandatory buybacks. His statements doubtless reference comments from former Democratic presidential candidate Robert \u201cBeto\u201d O\u2019Rourke, who said during a debate that he would confiscate AR-15s and AK-47s.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cMany Americans have been absolutely shocked to hear recent\npronouncements by prominent national candidates who are vying for the\npresidency of the United States threatening and even outrightcalling\nfor national gun bans on some of the most popular and commonly owned rifles in\nthis country,\u201d Blake said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cMany of them \u2026 have demanded mandatory buybacks which is\njust a fancy way of saying we\u2019re going to force local law enforcement to\nconfiscate weapons \u2014 legally owned weapons \u2014 from their fellow citizens,\u201d he\nsaid.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lake County Sheriff Peyton Grinnell wrote a letter saying he\n\u201cfully\u201d supports the resolution.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lake County is just the latest county to declare itself a \u201csanctuary\u201d from gun control efforts. Local governments in Illinois, Colorado, Washington, Arizona, California, and Texas<\/a> have prohibited funds or resources being used to enforce gun control laws they believe are unconstitutional. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Like in Lake County, many governments have passed sanctuary\nresolutions in response to gun control efforts. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Effingham County, Illinois, is often credited with being the first local municipality to pass a gun-sanctuary resolution when they did so in 2018. At the time, Darrell Miller, the co-director of the Duke Center for Firearms Law, told CNN<\/a> that such measures demonstrated unnecessary fear. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhy are they fearful any gun regulation leads to some kind\nof confiscation? Well, I don\u2019t know,\u201d Miller said. \u201cThis has been a talking\npoint for gun organizations like the National Rifle Association since the late\n1970s, which is, \u2018You can\u2019t allow any kind of gun regulation because it will\nlead to universal civilian disarmament.’\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After O\u2019Rourke\u2019s comments, along with numerous proposals\nfrom Democratic candidates to ban or \u201cbuy back\u201d firearms, the gun control lobby\nhas been more forthright about its desire to confiscate certain types of\nfirearms. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Politifact noted<\/a> in October that O\u2019Rourke has been asked at least twice whether he supported confiscating firearms. On both occasions, he said yes. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

In one instance, CNN host Chris Cuomo asked<\/a> O\u2019Rourke, “All right, so let’s state the proposition. Are you, in fact, in favor of gun confiscation?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Yes, when it comes to AR-15s and AK-47s, weapons designed for use on a military battlefield. …So, when it comes to those weapons, Chris, the answer is yes,\u201d O\u2019Rourke replied.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n
