I\u2019ve mentioned this before: Basically any modern-manufacture\nfirearm available new in a gun shop today is of high enough quality to function\nwithout failing very often. Oh, it might be uglier than the underside of a\nrotten saddle and sit in your hand like a whittled brick, but it will likely\nfire and cycle as intended.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I understand that it pains many shooters to read such heresy\nin these pages [Concealed Carry Magazine<\/em>], but my point isn\u2019t that you\nshould buy inexpensive guns. My point is that you should never buy inexpensive\ndefensive ammunition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I once heard a man lament that, \u201cYou don\u2019t always get what\nyou pay for, but you always pay for what you get.\u201d When he said it, he was\ncomplaining about the strength of a mixed drink served to him on a\ncross-country train. I\u2019m here to tell you that the same can be said about a lot\nof ammunition, specifically imported ammunition. If you train with and carry\nnothing but corrosive North Korean mil-surp ball ammo, you shouldn\u2019t be\nsurprised if your results are less than optimal. I\u2019m not talking about solid\nsilver projectiles. I\u2019m talking about spending on your ammunition like your\nlife depends on it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Which, incidentally, it just might.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

GOING TO GROUND<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

When I was a boy, I was in a gun shop and saw a box of\ncartridges that cost more than $100. Adjusting for inflation, we\u2019re talking\nabout rifle cartridges that, in today\u2019s dollars, were going for more than $10 a\npop. I asked my father what they were and since he didn\u2019t know, he asked the\nman behind the counter, who told us that they were cartridges for a rifle that\nyou\u2019d use on a dangerous game safari in Africa. Pointing at a Cape buffalo head\nover the cash register, he said something along the lines of, \u201cWhen you\u2019re\nfacing something like that, it doesn\u2019t pay to cheap out on your ammo.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I would submit that a concealed carrier would have even less\nof a reason to \u201ccheap out.\u201d The man on the dangerous game hunt in Zambia went\nout of his way to put himself in that position and is probably enjoying the\nfulfillment of a lifelong dream. More importantly, for the purposes of this\nconversation, he would also be backed up by his \u201cP.H.\u201d \u2014 professional hunter \u2014\nwho would be holding a rifle chambered for a cartridge that is as close as you\ncan get to a \u201cproblem extinguisher\u201d this side of a 20mm depleted uranium round.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The concealed carrier who\u2019s being forced to defend himself\nwould rather be doing anything else at the time. Everything has gone wrong to\nsuch an extent that he\u2019s now in a fight for his life, and if he manages to\nsurvive, he might well spend some time re-thinking his asset allocation. When the\nCape \u2018buff gets your scent, you\u2019d rather know you bought the best. When a\npredator closes in and prepares to make you his meal, don\u2019t be asking yourself\nwhy you absolutely, positively had to save $5 on 20 cartridges.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A PREMIUM ON PERFORMANCE<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Will a less expensive cartridge \u201cgo bang\u201d? Will its\nprojectile leave the barrel at a speed that would make it dangerous to humans?\nAlmost certainly, but will that projectile stop a deadly threat with the least\nnumber of shots possible?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Well \u2026 it might, but I wouldn\u2019t be willing to bet on it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Bearing this in mind, new shooters need to understand that\npremium defensive ammunition is worth what it costs for several very good\nreasons.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

First of all, the cartridges themselves are extremely\nconsistent. By this, I mean there are almost no physical differences from unit\nto unit within a box. The bullets themselves are of extremely uniform weight\nand size and are all equally and perfectly seated into the cases. The primers\nand case bases look almost as if they are clones of one another. There will be\nalmost no difference between the amounts of powder each cartridge contains.\nThis combination results in ammunition that, if it pairs well with your\nspecific sidearm, will reliably perform more accurately and, therefore, be a\nsafer and more prudent choice for your defensive needs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Secondly, that uniformity doesn\u2019t just lead to better\naccuracy, it leads to higher reliability as well. When it was designed, that\nspecific cartridge was manufactured to operate in firearms of its type, and\ndeviations from these specifications result in failures to feed, fire and\neject. When each and every cartridge is identical to the tolerances possible\nwith modern specialty manufacturing, the chance of your pistol or revolver\nexperiencing an ammunition-induced malfunction drops to basically zero.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Third, the projectiles themselves will not only be of almost\nidentical weight and dimension, more effort and resources will have been\nexpended on their design and manufacture. Physically, they will be higher quality\nbullets. I don\u2019t know how many rounds I\u2019ve fired into gel over the years, but\none reality immediately jumped to light: Certain ammunition contains\nprojectiles that are extremely predictable. Sure, all bets might be off if you\nhave to engage a home invader who\u2019s wearing improvised body armor, but through\nour testing here at CCM<\/em>, we\u2019ve confirmed that money spent on quality\njacketed hollow-points is as wisely as any concealed carrier can invest a few\n$10 bills. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

INVEST WISELY<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

There will occasionally be exceptions. I carried a Model 19 Smith & Wesson <\/a>as a woods gun for many years, and try as I might, I could never find a cartridge that shot as accurately out of that old beast as the Winchester \u201cwhite box\u201d personal defense .38 Special +P jacketed hollow-points. It was, at the time, kind of an obscure load that I was only able to occasionally find at Walmart, but I bought them out of it whenever possible because it shot like a laser out of that old K-frame of mine and a box of 50 jacketed hollow-points rarely cost more than Wally World wanted for a box of target .38 FMJs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I only bring this up because it is the one and only time in\nmy decades of pistol shooting that I\u2019ve ever even heard of the cheapest round\non the shelf delivering the best accuracy and packing a quality defensive\nbullet. In literally every other circumstance I\u2019ve ever experienced, a\nresponsibly armed American would have to spend a little more on his \u201csocial\nammo\u201d than on his training ammo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

IT\u2019S IN THE MAG<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Equally important to folks who carry a defensive autoloader\nis purchasing quality magazines. Many have been the times I\u2019ve seen a man spend\na grand on a quality 1911 only to hamstring it by pairing it with nothing but\n1980s government-contract mags. After spending $1,000 on a pistol, all of a\nsudden it\u2019s time to save a buck, and in doing so, he manages to turn a gun\nthat\u2019s almost ultimately reliable out of the box into a shady jam-o-matic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Whenever possible, you should only purchase OEM (original\nequipment manufacturer) carry magazines for your defensive pistol. What this\nmeans is that if you carry a Glock 19, you should use magazines manufactured by\nGlock, Incorporated. If you carry a Springfield or a Walther or a SIG, well \u2026\nguess where I\u2019m going to advise you source your mags?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The exception is the 1911. Though it will almost certainly\nship with at least one magazine, if you\u2019re going to follow my program of \u201chave\nas many magazines for each pistol you own as the average 7-year-old has\nindividual LEGO blocks,\u201d you\u2019re probably going to have to do a little research\nabout your specific gun.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This is where our old friend Mr. Interwebs comes in. Never\nbefore have you been able to read reviews from so many different 1911 owners\nwho will be able to steer you in the approximate right direction, and this is\none of the few areas in which borderline random Internet chatter is actually\nworth something. You could bankrupt yourself buying and assessing every last\n1911 magazine available. Reading about the experiences of other 1911 shooters\nwho own your specific make and model of pistol can save you a lot of time and\nmoney.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Apart from that, I\u2019m afraid you\u2019re just going to have to get\ncomfortable with the fact that ammunition and magazines will likely be an\nexpensive component of your EDC. Mid-violent assault isn\u2019t the time to be\nwishing you could spend that money over again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
